When you've shredded the crotch out of one pair (it's gonna happen...) don't just fling 'em, cut the legs into square patches and stitch one to the crotch of a a cheapie pair from JS / Tesco et al (if you can't manage this then be nice to your Mum and she'll probably do it for you; it's the bloke equivalent of suddenly coming over "all girlie").
I've done this for the last 3 winters and managed to get myself 2 pairs of "commuting" jeans for less that £15. This year I went for the extra patch stitched to the inside of the jeans and then wear an old pair of trek shorts, with a pad, underneath them so I don't ruin my sac on the stiffer crotch bit.
