  • although people always talk about italian coffee 'n that......personally, the best coffee i've ever drunk came from the Nords.... from this machine...

    strong and small.

  • The film-rolls look most appetizing, just some gravy to go with em

  • Coffee in fridge = fail.
Unless you have problems or do lots of entertaining, more coffee than you can drink in a week or two fail.
    Film = fail. :)
    0 Beer = Epic Fail.

Whole bean - ok so it's not perfect, but it's not going to go off as quickly as grounds.

    Also, storage fail...

  • Mine is kept in the cupboard. But I now have an air-toight container for a bag o' beans. It's about as good as you can get I fink.

My machine is working great guns again after the descale. Massive crema on the new bag of Monmouth SomethingorOtherBeans.

  • why is coffee in the fridge not good?

  • Other flavours in the FridgeAir(tm) are absorbed by it. Moisture in the fridge is higher than the cupboard too which I believe is not so good.

  • oh. oops. i've been storing coffee in the freezer for most of my adult life.

Freezer is surely better than fridge though.

  • Get one of those coffee tasting nutters onto it for a side-by-side comparison..

  • Well, everyone can change.. right :)

jesus. that's insane. i mean... i like a good coffee but there's no way i'm investing in some sort of hermetically sealed walk-in coffee humidor.

  • Me either. I prefer the cupboard option in sealed container since it doesn't take beer space away ;)

  • I tend to keep my beans in the freezer [why does that sound like an euphenism] and take out what I need each time and give them 30 mins at room temp before grinding

  • my understanding is that the key thing you want to avoid is moisture - and this can be created by changing temperature. So, the fridge and freezer can be bad because if you are taking a bag of beans in and out of the fridge/freezer, the change in temperature between the fridge/freezer and the room can cause condensation and, over time, the beans deteriorate.

one solution to this if you buy in enough bulk to want to freeze beans is to bag them in weekly doses. Then grab a bag for the week and leave the rest where they are.

but, I think if you are only buying a weeks worth, storing them at room temp is fine (and as the cheaper price for monmouth beans starts for about 500g, which is about a weeks worth, that suits me).

afaik, storing in metal or plastic is not great because they can flavour the beans - glass or ceramic is best (but you have to keep the former out of the light).

My compromise is to keep them in the bag they came in, and keep that inside a tupperware.

This could all be complete rubbish. But I heard it on the interwebs and therefore believe it to be true.

  • Bang-on Scoober. Wouldn't worry about storing in plastic, and just be sure to de-frost thoroughly after freezing before opening the container.

  • i heard from my local barrista this morning that city roasters have had to switch to roasting only late at night because their neighbours are complaining about the smell.

i can't really believe the pettiness of that... roasting coffee is one of the nicest smells in the world!

  • Yeah, the smell of diesel fumes is so much nicer.. twatas.

do you mean square mile? i don't know but you might be confusing roastING coffee to roastED coffee.
the smell of coffee actually roasting isn't that nice!

  • i do mean square mile, yeah. and maybe i've never smelled roastING coffee then...

  • Probs to do with the thick blue smoke as much as the smell if its anything like our setup

  • I've told you before fella, it's easier to bury the bodies…

  • but they taste so gooood drum roasted

  • Anyone know anywhere to get decent beans anywhere near maida vale? Or should I just take a post work trip to Monmouths at Borough Market?

  • If it's not too late, Salusbury stores in Queens Park do Monmouth beans
