Great system you had there - but Notts analouge and valves - a big change in style for a flat earther!

  • 1.Source
    2.Amplification
    3.Speakers

+1, I agree, however, my little list was regarding the LP source only.

prior to Ivor. accepted wisdom was effictively...3 then 2 then 1!

This was weird... If it was 3 (cartridge) then 2 (tonearm) then 1 (mechanic), it means that you do not benefit from all the qualities of your cartridge if you are using a poor turntable... It contredicts the other rule in a way:
    1.Source
    2.Amplification
    3.Speakers

  • yeah - there is a hell of a lot of foo in the audiophile world and a lot of people seemingly willing to pay for it.....

  • im pretty happy with my setup- marantz pm6002 and cd6002 as well as some b and w speakers. sounds lovely.

  • 'foo'

    Lovely word.

  • Forget foo! Forget interconnects, green felt tip on your CDs and oak cones under your CDP. They may have minor effects For real improvements, read up on stuff, try to understand some of the science (there's a lot of it - and I don't pretend to understand 10%) and - most importantly - experiment and listen. I've been modding a dirt cheap Marantz CDP. Amongst other things, I replaced the crappy opamp output stage with a simple tube one, like this guy (warning, this guy is nuts and his site can cause you to start relentlessly purchasing crap old CDPs, which are another thing for the other half to moan about as well as bikes).

The bloody thing is ugly as sin but sounds brilliant, and I'm not done yet. Since I started reading this guy's stuff, and really listening to my hifi, and thinking about how it works, some of my more expensive gear has gone. I'm spending peanuts and just enjoying listening.

  • yeah its worth remembering that the best upgrade for £100 is a decent bottle of wine and a stack of new vinyl :)

  • i understand that the wisdom that you need expensive CD transports/digital source is now being widely questioned - all that matters is the DA conversion.

  • but you must be able to hear the third trombonist from the left clear his throat in act two of la traviata by verdi ( LSO recording ) otherwise your stereo sucks and you need to upgrade

  • These Mercury M1s are collecting dust in my loft, part of my first setup paired with a Rotel RA 931. Awesome budget setup.

  • I had some Tannoy DCs for a while, not some of the finest, DC200, but the HPs only, built into a custom box by the previous owner... It was poorly finished and did not look very good, however the sound was great... I had to get rid of them (well they are in the attic) because I had to save space in my room...
But I would love to have a big music room and some of these big Tannoy as above... I briefly heard the Stirlings at a friend in Paris and I quite liked it!

Now I use Sony La Voce, beautifull sound too... These are understated speakers, because they are Sonys...

I met Tom Fletcher [owner of NA]....and i visited him in Chesterfield.....and i am a convert.....his decks with a valve amp.....made my LP12 Naim combo sound 'tinny'.....still like Naim but.....my ex wife considerd Tom a Hi-Fi Fascist.....i quite like him...truly passionate about vinyl......but if the Lotto works it magic my way it will be NA, valves and a matching speakers.

  • Had a pair of these for a very short while

Then realised it was very sad, sold them a bought a new car
At least I never bought these

I have them cause my mum gave them to me to buy those :)

At demos i used Bach Double Violin Concerto first movement [Pinnock/English concert on Arkiv]...if the 2nd violin was not clearly seperated.....i was not happy...sad!......This really hit home when i listened to the Linn Lingo and Naim Armageddon and 'believed their was a difference'.....it was at this point i realised i had lost it......something called pyscho-accoutistics.....belief is a far greater power than reality......which perhaps brings us on to belief in god or not!

Indeed - there is a certain school of thought that Audiophiles basically have a defect in there brain which doesnt "fill in" the music like it does for most people, thus sending them on a riduclous and unreachable quest for audio nirvana

Either the above, or its just more big boys toy, just like with bikes.

I came within 5 seconds of ordering a titanium seatpost for my road bike today. Then reality hit, and I reasoned that I was only buying it because it was Ti and Ti is cool. I did not click "Confirm Order"

Indeed...never happy...so always planning the next upgrade...when DVC will sound perfect but it does not [although it does...in fact it did 10 upgrades before hand].....crazy..glad i am out of that loop...so the Quads would have been brilliant with a Rega Planer III and matching speakers......and enough money more more vinyl and a bottle of apple juice [i don't like wine]......but each to their own.

  • I am now happy with my hifi and have not thought about an upgrade for 18 months. I'm done and happy.

As the Stone Roses once said in the NME 'A good draw is like having a top quality CD player'

  • I am now happy with my hifi and have not thought about an upgrade for 18 months. I'm done and happy.

As you have a mega TT with TWO tonearms...you should never need/want to upgrade again especially if you have matching [qualitywise]...amp and speakers!

  • Everything is of a similar quality. I got some very good deals on some very good kit.

  • I used to have one of these bad boys. Wish I still did.
