They ride around on their clown bikes with brightly coloured wheels and punk rock handle bars laughing and singing into their portable telephones and think all this just happened by itself, not knowing people like us stepped up to the mark when it was asked of us and fought in the corpse strewn trenches of the great bike wars.

The kid finally asked for a fixed gear bike. Not sure why he didn't want one earlier in the year.

Anyway, over the last few weeks we got new wheels from a Langster and an affordable, quality 531 frame. The rest of the parts were spare around the house.

If mine, I'd finish with toeclips, brakes and a new chain and be happy, but he's 14 and already talking tri-spoke with coloured tires and chainrings.

Before I put my foot down, what can easily and cheaply transform this into something special for a teenager?

Definitely get a front brake - you can pimp it out a bit with coloured cable outer and funky lever.

Aside from that, oury grips and top tube cover should appease.

Riser, Ouvry grip (however you spell it), velocity deep V rims and Rolls should be enough to be honest.

A quick shop here should cover most bases
