I'm not about to switch back to geared bikes just because they're faster, but few people doubt that they are, except on the very few courses where you really do only need one gear all the way around.
Given the struggle Boardman had on the downhill start when he set the old record, he might now be kicking himself that he didn't use gears that day, it would surely have kept him on top of the list for another few years if he had.
