You can't buy a Cinelli 2A (or whatever they're called) anymore... whatever. Hardly offensive.
The Thomson seat post is more offensive than the stem. Even the Kalloy clone of the Nitto 626 would be an improvement, aesthetically.

Oh I dunno Ed... one can think too hard about these things. You can't buy a Cinelli 2A (or whatever they're called) anymore... whatever. Hardly offensive.
naturally, but this is the porn topic, rationality doesn't come into it!

Dunno, maybe.
The other component choices create an expectation of what should be where to create a stylistically homogeneous whole; on that particular Mercian, the Thomson looks out of place. Optimum seat post, assuming the owner takes my advice and swaps cranks with the Pinarello, would be a Campag Record round single bolt one. To go with the stem, however, a Nitto would work. Given that the Kalloy clone of the Nitto 626 would be indistinguishable at a distance, that too would be better than the Thomson, speaking purely from an aesthetic point of view. Of course, the Thomson is a functionally excellent post, it just belongs on a more modern looking build than that Mercian.

U r such an hipster!!! ;)
Agree on the looks issue, but isn't one of the most important factors (if not the most important) to achieve porn, quality over aesthetics? Being a Mercian i would have chosen different components, but that can hardly be considered bad choices, if quality is the subject. IMHO. -

No, to be porn it must have both. Assuming, for the sake of argument, that the Mercian needs a zero offset post, the Easton EC90Zero is objectively better (by some measures, at least) than a Thomson, but it would be an even worse aesthetic choice. If you concede that there is a post which is objectively better than the Thomson, your proposition is that including such a post in this build, regardless of aesthetic considerations, would make it more porn.
The Mercian has already prioritised aesthetics over function by being made from steel and having a quill stem, so a small increase in weight to accommodate a more aesthetically pleasing choice of seat post which does the job just as well as the Thomson would be entirely in keeping with the ethos of the build.
You're losing it Balki.
