Duncan - cheers man, i been doing a lot of research after having to hand the panasonic back to school, think the canon hf 11 or panasonic tm 300, as far as hand helds go they look to be the bomb, both flash memory as well, excellent low light res which is important for filming near the surf asnd at the trails. Steady cam's look amazing, expensive right?
If you want low light capabilities the Canon 5D (and now 7D) are simply off the scale - in a league all of their own - you can rent out a RED1 and it will not come close to the image the Canon's can resolve in low light - stick a f/1.2 lens on the front and you are into comedy territory, you can light a room with a candle and get a wonderful clean footage.
Here is some footage I took in near darkness - quite how dark it is does not come across in the clip, but it was very dark, the sort of light level that would have cheap camcorders showing a black screen.
