  • Shit news :-(

    Ride safe everyone

    RIP

  • I went past at 9am, police confirmed female, didn't confirm death at that stage, the bike was still under the truck, the helmet (seemingly undamaged) and bag (cut off) with medical detritus, syringes blood etc were still in evidence, form position of bike it looked to me as if she had been run over from behind, didn't look as if it could have been a cyclist to the left in blind spot incident.

    RIP

Can we do something with roadpeace?

good idea. roadpeace seem like an excellent organisation. i sometimes wonder where lcc are in all this danger / death on the roads etc. and rospa. where the f*** are they ?
not to mention dept of transport. dont get me started.

Phil, the LCC does constant work on this. We host the joint HGV Working Group which CTC, RoadPeace, and Living Streets attend, and most of the advances in this area (and yes, despite this new tragedy, there have been a few) are directly attributable to the work of that group. It's constant hard work and there's a huge amount going on.

noted. it just seems to be taking ages for any real change. and whilst it is taking ages people are getting killed. and many people are too scared to take up cycling. (one of my mates is nervous about recommending people to start cycling).

is it an idea to get rospa on board ? they have done a lot on safety in the construction industry over the last 20 years etc.

(for example i found out today that the speed limit on the olympics construction site is 15 mph. yet their lorries drive off their site, and then drive through the community at 30 mph. dont seem right to me. surely safety is safety wherever it is).

maybe this thread is not the time and place.

    speak soon.

  • This is very sad.

I caught one of my staff doing the same inside a lorry turning left the other day, and screamed at her. I really thought the worst would happen. Luckily the driver was looking in his new mirrors and also started to stop. I had a long word with her about it!

I also feel for the drivers in this situation. I have driven many vehicles and when you put a car next to an HGV there is no comparison. They can't see a thing up there, even with the new mirrors, visability around the vehicle is next to null. I think it's also worth noting there are a lot of mirrors to check, so slow down around trucks as in a gance they may not see the faster among you.

    Ride safe people, please.

  • Condolences to the family and friends.
Ans as ever maybe it's best to keep speculation about what happened and what can be done in future for another day or thread.

  • v. considered Will and an attitude I'd like to agree with.

Again condolences to all affected, how horrible.

  • I have a couple of friends who have been cycling the roads for years but are giving up because they saying it's too dangerous these days. They now go out early mornings to do off road cycling and we don't even live in the city.
It's horrible to hear such things.I really feel for the loss of a young life and for her poor family.

  • Thats my route from east to south that junction is a nightmare RIP Lady.. so sad.

  • this has to stop. no more deaths. we do not need so many cars on the road. more bike lanes would only be a good thing.

  • Another unnecessary death. Condolences to the family.

  • shit. incredibly sad. i hate it when another of these threads appears. i used to live just off that junction and its a horrible one.

    rip.

  • Shame, as it's just outside of the congestion zone; still, there should be traffic cams in that area.

so sad. i am saying a little prayer for all of them.

what if it were my sister ?

i cannot relax without being a part of the change that is needed to stop this injustice.

  • RIP. I imagine we all open these threads while fearing the worst, that the person injured or worst is someone we know and care about. My thoughts to those who know and care about this cyclist x
