i just think you're plain wrong on the proportion of athletes on gear. most athletes just can't afford good drugs (no team structure like cycling/football, not much sponsorship apart from the very lucky few, etc).
cheap drugs are easily detected.
the majority of steroid users are normal dudes in gyms who want to get big and don't have to worry about being tested, and i reckon your mate's merc knows it.
Sure thats a reasonable size quota of where he earns his money, he's a low key low end kinda guy (apart from the merc!) and for the most part you would be right, but the dude with the range-rover, well he used to be (might still be, I haven't seen either of these dudes in nearly a year) a close personal friend of a pretty famous performance enhancing drug specialist ;)
