So the ride is about 35 miles long, through rolling hills with a few steep ones thrown in for fun.
Mostly on not too busy b roads, but there are a few more traffic intense places. It's a very pretty ride, actually, a few really beautiful green bits.
At the other end we'll be going to [ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ye_Olde_Fighting_Cocks[/ame] which promises to be a very very good pub. It was recommended by a local bike shop. -

Nice one Nhatt - I need to do more hills - I hate them, and I am slow - and I dont have a granny ring - but I'm game. Any chance of sticking a route in gmap pedometer or map my ride, then I can convert to garmin speak - and stick a route up here for anyone (will also have an elevation profile)
I'll prob get the train back though - 90+miles round trip from home is a bit much for me - if I'm going to make that gig in the evening.

this is the route....mostly. a few deviations.

I think the train back is a good way to go. Unless anyone presses the matter, I think this should be a one way trip. This time.

Yep - the Fighting Cocks is a pretty cool pub. Its on the edge of Verulam Park - looks like you'll ride through a bit of the park - full of bits of Roman wall & stuff, and a duck pond.
You'll probably want to get the train back from the main St Albans station (to St P), not the St Albans Abbey line which is nearer the Fighting Cocks. If you head up through the park towards the Cathedral from the pub you can then ride up through the centre of town and down Victoria Rd to the main station.
Interesting fact - when they excavated Roman Verulamium, they found very few remains of the previous dwellings, etc. Turns out that the cathedral got built using much of the ancient rubble.
Another recommended pub - the Horn - http://horn.spodnet.net/ - right by the station.
Have fun, sorry I can't join you!!

I'm going to try this fixed, unless you reckon the hills are so bad I'm going to massively slow everyone down. Can't afford the tweaks I need to make to my road bike just yet.
Also might ride back via the A roads cos I can't afford the train fare either and I need to catch up on some miles.

Is this a route that someone else has made, Nhatt? It looks to me like a point-to-point route that is intended to be fairly direct. I've ridden in that area a bit and if you want to extend the ride a little and both get some decent hills and some beautiful lanes in, I'd recommend turning off the B157 The Ridgeway at Cuffley into Carbone Hill, then left at Newgate Street Village, immediately right into Newgate Street, then left into Tyler's Causeway and Woodfield Lane, right along the B158 Kentish Lane, left along Wildhill Road, follow that to Welham Green, then rejoin the route at Dixon's Hill Road. I particularly rate Tyler's Causeway. But, of course, ignore this if, having done your recce, you like the route as it is!

tricity, I did the ride with nat on 47/19, there's no hills which would stop you from doing it fixed, there's a couple of short sharp bits, where you have to slog it a bit, but nothing mahoosive.

Cool, thanks. Looking forward to this.

Sweet thanks Nhatt sounds like a really good ride looking forward to it !
@ Tricity I may well be up for riding back with you will see how it goes but I too would like to get the extra miles -

We were recommended a few turning offs, but I think this time ticking to the map is good. My next week day off I might try some deviations, I'll post a thread about it when I have time.

Sorry ladies, epic fail I've just woken up after passing out last night at 9.30pm - no way I'll make it in time now. Have a good one and ride safe!

So how was it? I've got no real excuses, went out yesterday then got in at 9.30pm and literally passed out on the bed until about 8.30am this morning when I woke up and thought 'oh fuck!'
I fail.

It was really good - great route, cheers Nhatt. I tried to ride back with route directions and managed to fuck it up within about a minute, but I found a sign to Hertford so just rode there and took the A10 back. I do love the A10.
Really good riding with everyone today... hopefully see you all next week for tracktime.

Careful, the A13 might feel jilted. ;)

Cheers for organising and leading the ride Nhatt :) Was good to get out of London and see some greenery.
Looking forward to the track next Sunday. I shall be making sure my seatpost stays put by then!
I'm in provisionally. Not being there before, where is the bagel place on Brick Lane?
