  • Euhm yeah hi.

Have been lurking here for a while, but as I do not ride any of the super-awesome-sweet-bikes you people do, I did not find it worthwhile to post here. Until some complete arse stole my bike and left me in rather quite a bit of despair as I saved up ages to be able to afford myself a sweet ride.

Saying that, I am actually from Amsterdam so I guess I should be used to having bikes stolen, doesn't ease the pain even the tiniest bit though.

  • Hello all, I guess I'm a bit of a charlatan as I don't currently own a bike, but I'm purchasing one this week for when I start back at university. A few of my acquaintances at uni ride fixed gears and after reading up on them a little, I thought I might bow in to peer pressure a bit and buy one to see what its like.

Haven't properly ridden since I was 15 or so and I'm nearly 20 now, so I thought signing up to a forum like this would be a helpful place for tips and tricks regarding maintenance and getting around.

By the by, this is the bike I'm ordering, I don't have the money for anything better, would anyone here say this is at least a passable bike for a beginner? If my interest in riding fixed gear grows I hope to dip in to my student loan and buy a better one.

Should be OK for a taster bike.
    I admire your common-sense approach.
    Welcome...

  • Thanks, I try my best ;)

  • Hi Everyone, great site.

I have just aquired a 1959 Major Nichols frame-set and was wondering if anyone knows the original spec of the components.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

  • I like the last three newbies! Hello :D

I had a geared Carrera Subway when I was at uni and in the two years I had it I can't really says that there has been anything wrong with it. I think that is a good beginner bike.

If you are interested in bike mechanics and hang out in here you'll soon have the knowledge to build your own and that won't be much more expensive than what you have paid for the Carrera.

  • Thank you very much for the links Andy.

The old school BMX scene is going well and great to know your happy with what we supplied you with :)

Worth splashing out on a front brake cable, if nothing else...

  • i had one but it was the original cable and fucking snapped, getting one this weekend

  • Robert, that bike is too nice to convert. Leave it geared.

  • hi all!

I'm called Le Doc', alias Seb, living currently in france (hum...yes i'm french, noone's perfect =D)

I'm going to move my ass to london soon, maybee for a few month, so see you there!

i'm ridind a pinarello conversion, and a veneto pista

  • Welcome, Seb. We're looking forward to seeing your ass around London Town.

  • After almost four months of reading I think a "Hi to you all!" is in order...

  • Hello again, introduced myself earlier and now, as promised, I have got the photos of my rides. I welcome any comments about the ss as it is my first go at making one, and I did set myself a limit of £100 (excluding tyres, consumables don't count in my book). The eagle eyed among you will note that I am still running a block at the back, this is just until I work out the best gear for the area.

  • Newbie here from Watford, been reading a lot on the site for a while (the humour alone is a worth a read!) decided to join and say hello!
Was chilling out at tottenham court road today and the sheer amount of s/s / fixed bikes is unreal i really am behind the times!

Recently started riding to work and bought a cheap single speed off ebay, plenty of tacky red bits on it and an "unknown" frame which im hoping someone on here could id, with your knowledge and all that! cheers guys/girls
