  • I heard in Nottingham Trent halls they had to put up signs in the showers asking the men not to wank as the drains were getting clogged with semen.

In retrospect this is probably not true as everyone knows Nottingham is like 95% hot chicks...

  • There's a decent enough cooking show on BBC (I think) at the minute called Virgin cooks (I think) which is all students learning to cook and what's best to cook to save money... Worth a watch...

  • well i didn't get my first choice which was modern almost brand new aparments with ensuite etc etc, but i got my second choice which is a more traditional style building (and has meant that i've saved a grand on rent), about 400 people, not ensuite, but the rooms look pretty nice from what i can see on the internet, self catered, got things like table tennis, pool, music room, and essentially, a bike lock up place, which i am hoping is actually locked up otherwise the bike will be kept in my room.

    what about yours?

That sounds awwwight! As I'm actually not too far from home, i went for the top halls (ensuite modern rubbish) as i plan to only stay away from home for the first year, then just commute in my 2nd and 3rd. Halls are next to the sports village which has a really nice gym and pool. A £38m nightclub is just opening on the other campus, so i think I'll be set entertainment wise :) The bike locking facilities on site are vast, lots of upside down U type ones... But next to the halls they are all shit unlocked ones, which only let you drive the front wheel into to them. Bike in the room it is.

    Don buy things like

    • super-exotic hummus dip (student LOVE hummus)

Hummus is so easy to make! Just need a blender, chick peas, tahini, lemon juice, olive oil and cumin. AND PITA BREADDS.

    Absence of garlic fail

  • DIY caramelised onion hummus FTW!

  • Also stake out the local Tesco's for when they put all their reduced food out and make sure you have a freezer. The Tesco's express's round Manchester are a goldmine, not sure what it'll be like in London. Just go in every other night at that time, sorted. Picked up £35-worth of Pizza's for £7 the other day :D

My flatmate and I spend about £20 a week on all our food that way. Also Home Bargains is the students eternal friend. 39p decent-quality curry sauces, cheap rice, noodles etc.

Morrison's actucally cheaper, when living up north with a partner, our £200 monthly food shop at tescos was about £120 at Morrisons :P

Lidls sometimes have decent food in.

  • Absence of garlic fail

    Oh yeah, and garlic :D

  • You seem to be worrying too much about this. I am a student, and I just got the basics: Got a stir fry pan, some other basics for the kitchen and stuff. Just don't blow your money on retarded shit like takeaways and expensive bars. I was lucky I saved up enough money and parental support to live fairly well for a year before getting a job.

Saying that, now I have a job I am less of a social retard. (less)

  • Got a stir fry pan

"Is that a wok I see? Very nice! Are they worth getting?"

  • what is all this talk of rep spreading? i feel awfully confused :,-(

  • In a time long since passed there was an institution within LFGSS known simply as "Rep". It provided much gratification to the ego of many a humorous forumenger and likewise blackened the name of all those foolish enough to multiple repost Colnago lo-pro's in the porn thread...

Rep was destroyed in the great "P.C" purge as it was deemed to be a bit pointless and only made the unrepped a bit upset...

It is still fondly remembered by the more senior members of the forum... Kind of like how old people refer to "the war"...

    Those were the days...

    [/rose tinted specs]

  • mine was about £110 a week, which was alot for doing nothing. with that said it never went that way. the day the loan came in id buy somthing expensive, and then go on a decadent binge of nice food, ale, and drugs until it ran out. then id just get a job for the rest of the term.

  • just went and purchased a load of stuff, thankyou sainsburys basics, and dad.

  • I got myself a part-time job ... I was probably the richest student on campus .. though back then people were more willing to employ.

  • ^^ Tesco PTSD

  • You'd need an amazingly well paid job to be the richest student at UCL - a place where 1st year undergrads talk loudly on their phones in the library... to their cleaner; or leave a £2000 watch at a PC terminal; or spend £90 a week on getting beauty treatments; etc*.

*all the while moaning about being "like totally skint at the mo".

Anyone remember when higher education was truly inclusive?

Sorry I take that back ... I will revise my statement.

I was the richest Student on campus that didn't have mommy and daddy topping up their bank accounts.

If you ain't careful you become TSL = TESCO FOR LIFE.

I was one of those too :(

  • how long is your course? 3 years? 1st year is usually a piece of piss, so spend loads of money and enjoy yourself, 2nd year, you'll probably have more work and as a result go out less, you'll learn lessons from your 1st year on how to save. I wouldn't worry, you seem like your pretty much sorted money wise. I spent around 5-6 thousand including accommadation and bills last year, although everything will cost less in Leeds.

  • my course is 4 years atm - i am hopefully doing a year abroad which adds a year. i may not do that though, if the lessons are in french, as, i can't talk it that well.

    Never?

A first year undergrad at UCL once came into a tutorial where I was present with a 5,000 quid Hermes bag, offset nicely with an essay half-inched off the internet. Which, incidentally, if she'd bothered to pay for she would have got away with.

  • If you have enough time for a part time job its a good way of not only making money but you'll meet people outside of your uni and halls.

Also from what I remember when I was at LSBU on a wednesday night moonlighting on Greek street in Soho is uber cheap, if a bit nasty. (you'll have to get used to that)

    thanks for the advice.

my ideal part time job would be in a bike shop, i have been working on my bikes for a few years and love tinkering with them, but would like to learn more about how to fix them well, and more advanced stuff like facing and tapping. but i doubt anywhere would want to take on someone like that atm. but i would do anything really, as long as it fits in with studying.
