The lower strings have a longer scale length (in my case that low B is up to about 29") which gives a thunderous piano-like sound. Whereas the treble strings sit on a shorter scale length providing the warmth of tone required.
I wouldn't say ergonomics come in to in on as an extreme a fan as mine, it's actually a little harder to play. But the benefits in tone/string balance makes it worthwhile!
