I think it is worth pointing out that insurance policies draw no distiction between outside and communal hallways, underground carparks (including secure), sheds, lock up garages, balconies etc.
The only place it should be left unlocked is inside your house. Otherwise it should be locked to an immovable object and left for no more than 12 hours (considered abandonment).
People beware! - put it in your flat. Your flatmate/landlord/partner/etc is wrong and the bike must go inside the house.
I've had quite a few friends have bike pinched in the aforementioned locations and just don't want anyone else to have the same thing happen!
