Eight pages of people giving the gear ratio's of their bikes?
What a waste of the internet.
Yes but what ratio do you ride?!

48:19 here,
excuses: Birmingham is hillier than london, i have a high cadence.
lol, nah its a nice gear, 19 skid patches too which is beneficial.
above poster... 45 miles a day, you can't call anyone a pussy.
180 miles is just a long day on the bike mate!

Wha??

Do you not go through tyres pretty quick with that ratio. 50:20 = only 2 skid patches I think.
You can rotate your tires you know

Aye, no bother appart from a broken chain and some seriously haggard brake pads. The weather was ace, it was fucking epic. Here's the pics - http://www.londonfgss.com/thread28330.html#post904886
You didn't do it brakeless? HTFU :)

just discovered my chain on s/s has stretcted enough (1/8" kmc [not kool]) to allow me to remove halfink and chain tensioner and voila! magic gear 42/16 so 70 GI
wondering how long i will be in this blissful state.

39:15 gives me about 70 gi and is just about right for hilly cornwall - on a nice light bike, you can just about grind up any hill thrown at you, but not feel silly on the descents. Although I might drop a tooth at the back in a few months if my training has paid off and i am a likkle bit fitter ;)

just gone from 46-16 giving 75.6 gear inches to 46-20 giving 60.4 gear inches.
quite a big difference and i've always preferred a slower cadence as i've got pretty strong legs but i'm really enjoying spinning like a madman and it seems to be working my cardio harder too!
spin to win!

My roadie SS is set up with 48:17 which is fine for most stuff. It came with 48:16 (81") which I also liked but I broke 2 freewheels and when I got a decent one they only had 17 in stock.
On my normal geared (is that a dirty word round here?) road bike my normal cruising gear is 53:19. -

i run 48/19 to keep it skidpatchy and light, but i've been toying with the notion of weighting it up a bit. is it easier in the winter here (i'm canadian and not used to shitty rainy winter with no snow) to go spinnier or heavier? :/
i've got a 21 at home, just seems much too spinny to take out there, although if the rain is really gonna pummel me i might consider it.

I'm considering what to use for my Trainer when I get it. I'm thinking lower (currently 48:16) till I can build up strength.
I currently ride free on the road but will be fixed on trainer to work on cadence and, well there doesn't seem much point in coasting indoors.

49:16
Hills are a struggle though.

rather partial to a 50:19 at the moment...

urrrm, is 52-16 a stupid first ride? I'm discovering, yes.

That's 85.4 GI, ideal for pootling around town.

A super spinny 39/16 here. Might have to change...
-
• #695
Hmm I got stung on a new bike purchase not realizing that a 44x18 would be far to easy to ride anyone wanna swap an 18T for a 16T?

I had that exactly, changed to 39-14 a couple days ago and yeah, I do not look like a fan anymore.

48/17 and 50/20

44x18 ss and crying because it's too damn easy even on the uphill, hopefully switch to a 16T sproket and then treat myself to a 16T fixed when the next pay check comes in to use on the flip flop.

Keep the 18 freewheel and run a 17 fixed on the other side for the best of both worlds; optimised gearing on fixed, a bail out gear on the other side just in case.
