  • 46:16 on the cobbled streets of Auld Reekie. Fun times with all the fucking tourists at this time of year.

Not sure i'd be brave enough to blast down the Royal Mile in the wet ;P

I've just gone from 48:18 to 48:16 seems to be good for me right now in flat ole' London!

  • Sniffy, yeah, and I work down the Royal Mile too. Junction at St Mary's Street is particularly hairy at the mo. Just saw an Italian stride out in front of a bus with the red man on. Totally oblivious to the Lothian Buses driver giving her evils. Oh, and she was pushing a baby buggy.

  • Aye, you can have some fun wt them tho' on a positive note ;-)

  • 48:18 suits me, as does 53/39:13-14-15-17-19-21-23

  • 48 x 16

  • 768... next!

  • 17th...

  • 47;18

    or

47:17 when my knees aren't hurting so much.

  • 48x16

  • 48:15 is pretty good, 86 gear inches I think? Works well back home in south oz, bit achey on long rides and big hills, but can't beat flexing fast at a
staunchly calm pace... For real, feel like a bit of a gimp spinning out...

  • I like to feel the pedals going round fast and run 44 x16 on a 19mm tubular rear wheel .... only in the dry though !

  • 47x16

  • Just got a new chainset, it came with a 53T ring. I still have my 14T sprocket. That rounds up to 100 inches. My knees are doing ok, it's only been a week though. Moving off from lights is not too bad, bombing along in traffic = win. I guess it's a good thing there aren't too many hills on my commute (main part is oval - lewisham, all along a2 and a202)

  • I dunno.. these overgearies.. coming over here taking our jobs.. ruining our health service.. bloody immigrants.

    .

    Haha- "they took ewr jerrrrrbs!!"

    also 48:15= very nice

  • Just flipped to 39 :14 fixed. Quite a good ratio for road and off-road although rashly tried 12% on the road last night after the pub which was 'interesting' !

  • Eight pages of people giving the gear ratio's of their bikes?

What a waste of the internet.

Well wtf are you reading 8 pages of irrelevant info for then? It's relevant to the ppl taking part in the conversation at the time.

    Oh, and HTFU.

    In other news...

...I've been riding a geared bike for a couple of weeks whilst away in hilly south devon and now I've come back to a bike that wasn't running the gearing I wanted in the first place. So now I'm yo-yoing up and down between the different gear choices I have in my very limited supply, whilst preparing for a 70 mile ride and also doing tricks on the same bike!

At this very moment I'm on 42:16 which is about 70inches. Should be about right to work for all round riding.

  • I'm using 50 inches - based on highest gear I can get up Highate Hill in. Actually I'm not really interested in gear inches but I'm new here and this apparently gets me out of the kindergarten!

  • 79.1 gear ", went from inverness - ullapool - down the west coast and back over to the ness. 180 miles 4 days and only 3 getting off and pushes. We did this with 40l packs, tents and sleeping bags. Anyone moaning about running <70" is a pussy.

  • 45m per day?
    40l packs?

  • Aye, no bother appart from a broken chain and some seriously haggard brake pads. The weather was ace, it was fucking epic. Here's the pics - http://www.londonfgss.com/thread28330.html#post904886

  • A nice ride, but not quite worthy of such boasts and acusations of pussydom?

  • Hate to seem ridiculously retarded but I'm quite new to all this and have no idea what these ratios mean! Currently on 46:16, a bit slow on the uptake though is that normal or just me being a chubby bastard?

  • I am also on 46x16 after being on 46x18 freewheel.

I want to go faster, so might go down to 46x15...

  • 48x17.

Might get a 15 for the other side.

  • I used to be on 47x15 a lot, now on a 49x17. It's pretty versatile around London. I sometimes wonder about dropping down, or up ... oh bugger, who cares!
