Put the gears back on.

Put the gears back on.
yep, and some drop handlebars, and you'll have a half-decent little bike

You may find the 53 too high on the front - depends which cog you're having on the back, but you should aim for around 70 gear inches.

• #6
You'll also need a chain tensioner

As RedQuinn said you may encounter difficulties finding a sprocket big enough give the size of the chainring you are using.
I have used the Surly Singulator to convert a road bike to singlespeed, it seemed well up to the job.
Bear in mind you will need to run a tensioner as the frame has vertical dropouts.

with half a link you should be fine, magic gear FTW

You could stick a cog in the chain, like that guy at the polo championships

• #10
and maybe, just maybe turn the bars around the right way

go to the local shop and ask them to take the cassette out, them go to ebay and buy this, putting in and you done.
Cheers Rik, thought it would be something along the lines of that.....
I'm happy to change the 53t ring
Didnt really wanna put a tensioner on, but I suppose there is nothing i can do cos of the verticalsi owe you a bevvy
-
• #12
use half a link and you can get rid off the chain tensioner, and the 53t could be ok, depending what you put at the back
edit: no way to use the 53t is to big, go for something between 44t-48t

Or get a White industries eccentric hub rear wheel. I have one and it works a treat. Any vertical dropout frame can be SS or fixed.

CHEERS PEOPLE !!!!
I'll let you know the progress and hope to meet up with you guys at a meet soon
Hi
I'm in the process of building my first ss bike
I'm using a 2007 Specialized Allez for frame, forks (carbon), head seat, bb and crank
I've stripped it of all cables, derailleur etc... put a riser on, taken the small chainring off, re attached large chain ring (53t) with smaller bolts.
Its all looking quite good, I need to attack the rear wheel (hub and groupset etc..)
Is it just a case of taking of the goupset and fitting a ss cog ont the hub ???
I have Mavic Aksiums (all stock) i'm looking to use if its that simple or is it worth getting a new wheelset, rear hub etc..??
Your advice will be truely appreciated and once i'm up and running I'm willing to buy beers for knowledge at a ride/meet up
