James Luther Dickinson died yesterday... Legendary maverick Memphis producer and recording artist, he produced everyone from Big Star to The Replacements to The Cramps to the Panther Burns, he took the Stones to Muscle Shoals where they cut Brown Sugar (he played the piano on Wild Horses) as well as playing with Dylan, the Flamin' Groovies and too many other awesome people to mention... He was an immensely talented producer (check out Big Star's Sister Lovers) and became totally marginalised by the music industry for speaking his mind one too many times... He was happy to kick around at his place in North Mississippi producing the odd record for his kids and watching wrestling on the goggle box... A rock 'n' roll genius who never sold out and never stopped fightin' the man, he'll be missed greatly... Here's a link to an article written by my old spar Joss Hutton that I published in a fanzine I used to run... I'm gutted... :[
