Reckon he can't read the time on an Analogue watch but likes the look and needs the digital so he knows what time it is ... btw if you think I am making this up I knew a guy who did exactly this and he was a cunt.
Alternatively he may need to know the exact time without calculation in another time zone for his "Work" ....
