  • I just completed my first ride here in London (thanks MA3K for the amazing but painful st margaret's ride) and I'm only here for 3 more weeks and would like to make the best of it. Unfortunately I can't make the Brighton night ride as my flight out of london leaves early AM the next day - can't miss that one!

So does anyone want to make the journey down to Brighton this coming Saturday or Sunday? I'd gladly do it myself, but that could be quite boring and I'd most likely get lost. It would be especially helpful if someone with a bit of navigation experience would like to come along.

thanks! hope to hear from some of you

  • i might be up for it. where are you based?

  • A few dudes at trixie said they were interested on doing this before they went on holiday. I'll see if I can contact them and then get back to you. I'd be up for it as well. The next overnighter to Brighton clashes with Reading AND Carnival. tsk tsk tsk.

  • i am gay so wont be able to

  • hello again. looks like theres a bit of interest here - according to the weather report it seems as though Sunday will be a bit better for cycling. so if everyone is available then, that'd be great.

I'll look into some routes based on previous rides but I don't have a GPS or a mobile for that matter - so I might need a bit of navigation help!

re: Hovis Brown - I'm staying near the Emirates stadium but can meet up between highbury and the river.

re: Reginald - try to contact as many as you can! the more the better.

re: C.B. - I'm totally gay friendly so if you still want to go, please join!

  • here are two routes to brighton:

    http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-kingdom/brockley/585809668680 (Ditchling)
    http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-kingdom/brockley/866650361252 (Devils Dyke)

Sunday works for me. we could meet near Crystal Palace and head from there?

  • awesome. either route works for me and I can make it down to the crystal palace. have you done either route in the past?

  • It's a good route, i can't do that weekend as i am moving house. pissed!
enjoy it Alan and don't forget to get up ditchling in one....

  • yo Greasy, are you going to make the bridges ride?! I'll definitely be there. and I think I'll still be mashing on the same gear for the brighton ride - I have a deadline on Saturday at work so I won't get a chance to find tools, a cog and then change it before sunday. I actually had a knee ache the day before and into the morning of the St. Margaret's ride and the 130km of cycling totally cured all knee issues!

  • I'm probably up for this if the wind speed gets friendlier - BBC's saying 29mph on the coast and 20mph inland for Sunday. I'd rather do a day in the rain than fight a headwind like that :-)

  • I totally didn't check the wind speed! shit. well I guess we can play it by ear. although it is a West/SouthWest wind so it might not be in our face the entire time.

  • do brighton and back and thus negate the effect of the wind over the day

  • awesome. either route works for me and I can make it down to the crystal palace. have you done either route in the past?

i've done the ditchling one once, but haven't tried the devils dyke route. i've got a gps, so it should lead the way barring any unforeseen misshits.

let's check back how many people are interested on friday and then if everything is gravy, go on sunday (barring gales and pissing rain).

  • lets do devil's dyke then...

  • is this fixed or geared? and what kind of pace?

  • I'm riding fixed for the simple reason that British Airways only allows one bike on a plane - my gear is 49x17, about 76 gi. I'd like to ride at a decent pace, we won't leave anyone behind - but I definitely don't ride slow. i've never really timed myself on a long ride, but it seems doable in like 4 hours.

  • Check out bikely and search for FNRTTC (friday night run to the coast) usually tkes about 8 hours with a few stops for people and the odd cake and beer

  • i'm doing it geared, but it'll be a leisurely pace, i reckon.

  • I'm cool with whatever pace really, as long as I get some scenic views of england. so 4 hours, 8 hours - doesn't matter to me.

  • Is there date & time confirmed yet?

  • I got a party i need to work on saturday and sunday i am moving house... pisser!

the weather is better on the 15th, you should get to brighton and the sun is to the max... so they say

  • Thinking about doing a weekend scape/break...So it might works to get to Brighton with you guys. From there, myself train to Bournemouth or Southamptom, ferrys to the Isle of Wight and ride around the island visiting the west coast beaches.

Don't know yet, making up a disconneting plan.

  • Sunday 16 August, 9:30am at the Crystal Palace

  • Oh! Saturday would have worked better.
I am in 'stand by' for this ride. Not name in the list yet though.
