they are shit. high pivot and non-platform shock mean bobtastic under power and serious chaingrowth/kickback issues which is why nobody builds bikes like than any more unless they use a floating brake arm and RP/SPV type shock.
they were shit then and are even shitter now. plus they look like a £100 drug dealer pavement bike.go and check out nicolai, titus, ventana, intense, ibis and turner if you want bouncy porn.

they are shit.
That's harsh. They were leading edge in about 1991. If getting overtaken by advances in technique and technology disqualifies a bike from porn, we need to purge this thread of steel road race bikes, anything with non-indexed gearing, bikes with toe clips etc.etc.
The pivot location is not so different from the tremendously effective Orange DH bikes which keep winning World Cup races

The pivot on the orange is roughly in line with the chain ring the one on the San An is about 2" higher than the big ring, therefore not the same. You also don't need to do much climbing in a 224

I have a later version of this frame, sitting in my parents garrage, built up with an OG pair of Tripple Crown Judy's - gret for downhill, shit for up!

It is not in question that the San Andreas is showing its age, and that over any mix of terrain there is a modern bike which will kick its ass, but to slag it off by comparison with modern bikes is out of place on a thread which reveres vintage machinery far more than is proper. The 12 year olds who dominate internet fora probably don't remember where mountain bikes were 20 years ago, but at launch the San Andreas was as radical in MTB terms as the contemporaneous Lotus was on the track.

To be fair, the main reason they won races were because they had the best riders on board.
The riders that won on Orange bikes also won on most of the other bikes they ever rode too.
Steve Peat is one of the most naturally gifted riders ever...he won the national champs on a fully rigid Kona explosive with a 1.5" hardpack on the front when fellow competitors were on full suss frames with rock shox forks.
A good rider is a good rider. -

hmmmm

I agree though that back when it was first launched, the San Andreas was a BIG step forward.
They had the first properly working hydraulic disc brake, with large rotor, upside down fork, semi monocoque frame...etc...not to mention the great 'Earthquake' Jake watson as a rider. -

That stem is fucking hideous!

Just the stem? Apart from the frame, everything else looks like it's plastic! (I know it isn't though..)
Looks like that orange bike that is locked up near chalk farm..

leave it there and treasure the memories then buy yourself something nice instead.
(just an opinion, no offense like.) -

Just curious - Is there a functional reason the bit between the seat stays has multiple holes or is it a point of style?

Reduces a bit of weight, air drag
But mostly pointless "looks" feature
