  • i'm going to disagree with your "fixed gear ethos". if you ride fixed speed moderation is easy and instinctive. i don't commute every day but there are 50 sets of lights on my usual route in, i know the phases of the lights at junctions so know when to speed up and slow down so that my stationary time is minimised, i would rather slow down and track stand for a couple of seconds then move off than race up to or through a red light. this way your agenda is different from all those frantic nodders and you arrive at your destination with a warm readybrek glow and not in an apoplectic rage.

    absolutely fucking right, one of the reasons couriers rode fixed was the immediate response you get when riding (relatively) slowly in heavy and constantly shifting traffic.

    If you just want to ride at the same speed (as fast as you can) at all times then you may as well run gears
