i got busted at the junction of essex road and islington high street a little while ago. they lurk there about once or twice a week at rush hour. i was so annoyed i got caught as i'd seen them the day before and made a mental note to not. even though i'd forgotten about them, i stopped, waited, waited some more, looked again saw no-one and nothing coming and set out across the empty junction. just as i pulled away i saw the (quite hot actually) policewoman stepping out from her hidey place to pull me over. i got the impression that she was almost as embarassed as me to be having to tell me off. i didn't argue. they took my details but let me off the fine. they're only doing their job an di appreciated that they weren't particularly being cocks about it.
although having said that they obvioulsy chose the spot as a popular RLJ location with a view to cathing more people rather than improving safety. the reason people jump those lights is due to the design of the junction being condusive to relatively safe light jumping (there's low foot traffic and a long section of the cycle where there's no reaon other than the red light to stop). if they really wanted to make a difference they'd stake out the cycle lane/ped crossing on st john street a bit further down.
