  • Hi folks, new to forum so please be kind. I have recently bought a Tifosi Pista CX all new for a steal. I am in the process of upgrading it. So far - changed fixed to a 16t ENO freewheel, Izumi Supertough V Track Chain, just got delivery today of a Royce Titanium BB and getting a Campag Record Pista chainset which should be delivered tomorrow. I would like to know which wheel hub combo people would recommend. Other ancillary bits will be changed at a later date as I am concentrating on drivetrain and wheels first.
    Cheers

  • SEARCH!!! don't be so lazy you pillocking trumpet.

  • Hey BlueQuim, maybe if you tried harder at school and got a better job then maybe you too would have an extra few quid to spend on something you enjoy. I am 39 yrs old, married with a 9 month old boy, both my parents are unemployed and I earn a decent living selling software to jerks! Get your facts right pal before aiming a little misguided sarcasm my way! I happen to really enjoy bikes, is that a crime or could there be a little hint of jealousy - understood?

  • So far - changed fixed to a 16t ENO freewheel,

That being so, your first priority would be to buy a new frame with provision for two brakes.

  • Thanks 50/14 appreciated :-)

  • popcorn and thursday has only just begun

  • Why? I thought you could put a freewheel on a track frame? Why do they make flip flop hubs?

OMFG you poor little 39 year old!

Track bikes are for riding around velodromes in circles where braking is dangerous for other riders.

A bike on the street needs a stopping mechanism. If you got the skills then riding fixed without a brake caliper can be adequate. But for most a rim brake in addition to the fixed wheels stopping techniques is the safer and more efficient option.

If you are riding freewheel with no brakes how the fuck do you expect to stop? Your gonna get through a lot of shoes toe-dragging/foot jamming.

  • Thanks for the education. Who mentioned about no brakes? I have fitted a front brake as I didn't fancy wearing shoes out.

You made the suggestion by quizzing mitre testers comment about having two brakes when riding freewheel.

Sorry if I misunderstood, but I took it to mean that you thought a brakeless track bike must be safe to ride on the street with a freewheel because the manufacturers of hubs provide a second thread for an optional freewheel.

  • I have fitted a front brake as I didn't fancy wearing shoes out.

And you've fitted a freewheel, so to ride legally on the road you need to fit a back brake too. And your frame isn't equipped for a back brake, hence you need to replace your frame before worrying about which flashy expensive wheels to ponce about on. If you want to see that 9-month old grow up, you owe it to him and yourself to ride a safe bicycle; one snapped brake cable and you'll be looking for a soft car to run into the back of.

  • Ok, I didn't realise the legalities of having to have 2 brakes if running a freewheel. Out of interest, I could possibly get the back drilled for a rear brake or would that not work?

    wtf

  • Drilling a perfectly good frame may fuck it. Have you tried riding fixed yet?

  • I could possibly get the back drilled for a rear brake or would that not work?

Well, you'd void your warranty, the bridge hasn't been designed to work with a hole in it and the seat stays haven't been designed to resist brake torque loading, not to mention you have no cable stops so you'd have to zip tie the cable to the top tube, which would look gash. Apart from that, I can see no flaw in your brilliant plan.
