Honestly I have no idea what I 'should' be riding like because I don't have any sort of road riding background. It's only since about April that I started to really enjoy riding further distance where comfort is more important.

I think you should go back to the original setup, it's closer to a normal road bike bar. Ride with it for a bit (and I don't mean to the shops and back). See if you get used to it. You'll probably find you 'stretch-out' a bit the more riding you do.
If you still feel the bars are wide then move down to some 40cm anatomic road bars (there are plenty and they're cheap). That way your changing one thing at a time rather than fucking up by fitting deep drop keirin bars!
