+1 for spinny ratios, currently going from 44/17 to 42/17, for 25 mile daily commute (round trip), but SS, not fixed. Can usually manage 27 to 28mph down that big road from hyde park corner to Buck Pal, so it does it for me.
you guys all love your high ratios, i can't get enough of my spinny ratio
41/17

And drop your saddle 5mm.
ok, i lowered my seat, ready for tomorrows commute.

39/19 today, up every 20-25% climb between Caterham and Westerham.
Bad legs, but the 21t and 23t were strictly out of bounds.

im thinking on coming to the Tuesday night ride on this set-up, 68GU for the hills. Im not that fit though.
-
• #556
68 gear unches (sic) is fine for any climbs the TNRC incorporates.

• #557
I'm riding 48/15.
I think it works great for me but I don't like the idea of the lack of skid patches so am looking for something new. I don't know whether to go up or down though. Hmm...

Down. I used to run less than 48/15 on the track.
48/17 or 48/19 if you want skid patches. Watch out thought, as 48/16 will give you one skid patch.

Really?
I guess down will make it easier to trackstand and pedal backwards too, right? Any reason why you suggest changing the size of the rear cog over the chainring? I was thinking keeping the 15T and maybe changing to 46-47T on the front...? Maybe even 44T if you think it's better?
-
• #560
Well, cogs are cheaper and you get more of an effect per tooth (because they are smaller, so the gains are larger, relatively). Two teeth at the front is nothing.
47/15 is what I ran on the track and it didn't really feel under geared, so that must be hugely overgeared for the street? Some people mash, some people spin, but I think that the general consensus is that 65-75" is right for the street.
Running a 48T up front, something from about 17t to 19t at the back would be more sensible. It'll feel weird at first, but once you get used to the fact that you are pedalling faster you'll find you've got more control and what you lack in absolute top end speed you'll find is made up for in low end acceleration.

42x16 single speed for the hilly terrain of Norway, and 42x15 for riding around Copenhagen.

Yeah... I was just looking at the chart made by Denny Trimble that I'd seen floating around the forums and it seems like it would be too big of a change, but I completely get what you're saying.
I was thinking of changing the front rather than the back purely because I intend to change the crankset some time soon, so it would've made sense to do that then.
Thanks Tom, you're a dude.

As an SF native, I can't believe you're ridig 46:17. That's insane. I can barely walk up some of those hills.

Hi!
I hope this doesnt seem like a lame post...
Does anyone know what gearing i'd need on 26" wheels when im used to 44:14 on 700c?
thanks

• #565
I will before a thousand others say Use The Fucking Search,
if you are pushing about 84"gear,
and want the same difficulty (pretty hard) you could go for
46:14
also, UTFS -
• #567
45x18
But im putting now 19 to stop destroying my tire in the same place when im skidding
-
• #568
67" (46x18 on 700c x 25mm).
Good enough to cycle 620km twice across Wales (Chepstow to Menai and back) through Snowdonia in 40 hours.
Spin to win.

67" (49x19) is perfect, very spinny but overall better that way.

• #570
I recently went from a 52/18 to 52/16 (freewheel). much prefer it and generally perfect for riding in old london town. anyone got 52/16 on a fixie?
-
• #571
53/18 for me on fixed
-
• #572
I managed to destroy my cranks so I've had to put on some spare Sugino GTs. I was running 44:18, I'm now having to run 50:18. Hopefully my legs will be the size of tree trunks soon enough!
-
• #573
50:18 isn't big!
i suppose compared to what you had before though haha
-
• #574
3:1

And drop your saddle 5mm.
