  • it was a street sign not a lamp post, a typo

  • Ah, they probably just undo the street sign and lifted the bike, that's pretty common.

althought they probably did cut the lock too, we'll never know.

  • Hi,

I had my saddle stolen yesterday between 1.30 pm and 8 pm from the bike racks at the British Library. My bike was locked with a Kryptonite mini-D, and didn't appear to be tampered with.

What I think happened was that the thief knew a bit about bikes, as the saddle looked remarkably like a Brooks Swallow but black... whereas infact it was just the saddle that came with the Giant Bowery 72, the saddle of which is made by a chinese company called Gyes . And unlike the Brooks it is completely unbranded.

This leads me to believe it is pretty distinctive, (in its anonymity... if you get what I mean) so if anyone comes across it please let me know.

  • Hi there - I'm new on this forum - have been reading for a while but joined now with sad news: my bike got nicked yesterday afternoon on Broadway Market!

Similar to the picture but with black pedals with black cages and straps, and one handlebar with no tape on.

Would be very appreciative if people could keep an eye out - will reward to get it back. My email; w.bradley@ucl.ac.uk

    Cheers!

  • Black sparton ,vintage wolber rims , front wheel red tyre , dura ace crank with red chainring , red ouri grips , nice handmade saddle

  • not sure if it is nicked but....

black Create (i think it is) single speed on Kingsland Waste Market.

    Silver/brushed chrome deep v's.
    white grips.

    hmmmm

  • long shot that anyone'll read this, i know, but trawling bl agin.....did anyone lose a black track, with machined red rear, and red tyre, and a left hand shimano break? was unsold on a stall today.

  • As it says, one of my club mates has just had his black and yellow Carbon Fibre Cinnelli bike stolen in Pimlico :'(

Here is a pic of him racing the bike at Crystal Palace.

If any one in London spots it please let me know so I can let Cliff know.
    Cheers Steve

  • It would be easier to cut off the chainring, or take off the whole crank. And which thief would ever do that?

As its a theoretical solution, I also can't give figures for how much or little vibration, movement is required to trigger the alarm. I'd be happy to simply reset it, if I was in a pub having a drink, and it went off.

Just so you know there were some very resourceful wankers around richmond about a year ago...he lived in hackney and was doing a job there for about 3 weeks.

that after they had seen my friends fixed mtb with kona project2's and hope discs...all in all a pretty hybrid thing,

with pitlocks etc and even so paranoid as to araldite in the heads of the allen bolts...on the stem, brake calliper bolts, and pretty much anywhere else...

still stole the front of his bike...

they had somehow...undone his head set, stem, bearings and forks...etc...and unlaced all of this in a 6 hour period. which would be easy, if you were in a workshop or your front room...this was in a street in the door way of some 3 storey town houses, locked up snug to a railing., between 3 and 9 in the morning...the time limit wasn't astounding, the audacity, stealth, temerity, and abilty was.

how, well...we still really don't know how, ...it was all really tight a fit with the hose from the brake disc being wound through the frame, it would have been a fucking nightmare to steal...let alone remove the stem, the brakes, the forks and so on.

we figured they may have got the araldite out the maybe hammer the fork out of the frame...but then...there was so much bloody faffing to be had...we thought it too annoying to steal, it was anally retentive theft proof...

and they still stole the front of his bike, and left him the front cups, that was it, everything else was gone. including his thomson stem, hope disc brake, nice bars, grips, forks, rotor, and mavic wheel and hub.

so just be aware...if you don't have to leave it anywhere for a long, i.e. more than long enough to take something apart...

try not too, some of these people are really, really good at nicking shit.

andin response to things that you lock too being taken apart, outside the galleries near bistrotheque on wadeson street in bethnal green, are some key lock railings, it is a known fact that these are regularly taken apart to steal bikes, best haul was last december 6 bikes in one hit...locks and chains taken too...including my bike that my mate had borrowed (I would never have locked it to them...=[...

  • One more for the list... my Orange P7 mountain / touring bike stolen last week. Someone broke into porch / entrance to house in KingsX where it was - foolishly - unlocked. When stolen, it had an yellow saddle rather than a brooks, no pump, no rack or panniers, and shwelbe marathons front & back. Small dent in top tube. Bike was my workhorse. If someone offers it to take it and their spleen. Thx.

  • Me and a mate once had our bikes stolen while attending a rave. my mate knew who it was and after speaking to a few mates got his bike returned within half an hour ( a rather nice Battaglin), but mine never materialised. Thankfully I didn't have to walk far to get home..

  • My baby got stolen last weekend just by the Haggerston Pub on kingsland Road. If anybody sees it around can you please let me know. Thanks for the effort people!

This is what is looks like

  • kingsland road, there got to be signpost erected to warn people never to lock on that road in particular.

  • Complete hot spot for bikes being stolen around there. Mind you whole of East London is to be fair. It's a real pisser that it's got to the stage where you just can't leave your bike locked up anymore. You have to keep it with you at all times.

  • postcode starting with E is usually risky, but kingsland road defintely does look like a complete hot spot, every pages here have a couple mention of kingsland.

will keep my eyes out for dingos

  • Very sorry to hear about your bike got stolen, but honestly mate, it's never a good idea to lock your bike outside the IMAX (or cinema in general), theft assumed you're in the IMAX watching some film, thus have enough time to cut it.

Too true. I work in a theatre which has an area out front for cyclists to leave their bikes. Thieves take bikes from this 'public' area with monotonous regularity. Under full view of cameras and amid the comings and goings of the general public. The average bike thief is opportunistic - give him the opportunity and he'll sure as hell take it.

  • Another one to add the list.

Large Charge Plug Racer stolen overnight from inside the supposedly secure stairwell outside my flat. The bike was locked up using an Abus Diskus, locked to a metal ring which was bolted to the wall. The thieving bastards have unbolted the ring and taken the bike, the lock and the ring.

The bike was standard except for unchopped M-Wave brand riser bars (no grips either - I'd only put the risers on on Wednesday night!)

I'll be down at Brick Lane on Sunday morning ready to smash some heads.

  • sorry should have said - my bike was stolen from my flat in Hoxton, just north of Hoxton Square.

    bastards.

  • Bastards indeed. Sorry to hear about it.

  • I'll be down at Brick Lane on Sunday morning ready to smash some heads.

good luck! (I mean that) go early, stay into the afternoon. IF you have your serial number bring it..and a friend or two..and a lock.

  • yep, seems like the dodgy bikes are on sale quite early. I go past the brick lane market on the way to work most sundays and the times I've spotted the dodgy bikes I've posted about before has been before 9 in the morning. perhaps they prefer there being less people so that they can get away easier?

  • My mate at work just had his bike stolen. He stopped into the hospital to make an appointment as he has early onset PD and was in there for 10 minutes. Came out and the bike was gone. He said he used two cable locks on it. I don't know which hospital but I'll find out tomorrow.

His bike is a Silver Specialized Tarmac Elite and it's 61cm. If anyone sees someone with a too large bike matching this description please let me know. I'll be watching Gumtree and Craig's list and will go through Brick Lane this weekend but that seems a long time for a tealeaf to be sitting on a bike.

  • cable lock, that sound like those cheap one?

  • It might well have been, and I'll ask him. He wasn't particularly chatty today as he's gutted to lose his bike. I do believe he had something like an Abus one. I can't really remember but I don't think it was a completely naff one.

Although given that his bike was stolen it clearly wasn't sufficient.
