  • 50/50 about this now, holiday straight after is the priority.

  • Look out for a pair of idiots on penny farthings. That'll be me and Andy. You'll not be surprised to hear that we're not going to be riding home.

For one night only, shouts of "do a skid" will be encouraged (if not actually acted upon...)

  • Just a word of warning, I spoke to a mate who does a lot of this long distance stuff.
Be careful not to have to many of the energy gels if you haven't trained with them, apparently they
can play havoc with your guts if you overdo it!

Wouldn't be pleasant having a gastric episode at 3am in the middle of nowhere!

  • Eh???

    ;)

He's from Germany, they do things differently over there.

  • Bringing sunglasses and suncream is the best way to guarantee a downpour.

Worked for me on the Bryan Chapman: http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b187/vicechair/BCM600%202009/P5150542.jpg (only 380km to go at that point).

Haha, glad you spotted my deliberate mistake. EAST, I meant EAST. :)

That photo really sums up the joyous experience of riding in the UK.

  • charlotte, that is wicked.
tricity - yes you will need sunglasses.

looking forward to this. there is some nice blacktop out there.

I may take a small drill to make holes in my shoes if they start filling up with water again. Drainage is where it's at folks.

be prepared for evil farts on sunday/monday. eating lots of energy bars tend to have that effect.
luckily the resulting miasma is heavier than air so as long as you are standing up the smell will sink quite quickly.

Even if you're not necking gel's like a three year old at a birthday party, take some toilet roll, preferably in a waterproof container like a sandwich bag. You'll regret the onerous burden less than the consequences of not having any should you need it.

    do a skid!!

  • Chris, wasn't it also Jacqui who told you there was only a few miles to go when there was still about 20 to do?....

hehehe... thats how i got through the first one i did too. Its trickery - yes. But for the greater good. *I might add Chris did the ride in excellent form last year.

    @ chris - I can't ride right now unfortunately. ;(

  • Word.

You'll be fine. Just take it easy and break it down into chunks, don't think of the whole distance or it'll seem very daunting.

At the start just think about getting to Sudbury, from there just think about Dunwich. Same for the way back.

    Sage advice.
Although my current plan is to not actually stop in Dunwich, if we ride into dunwich then turn straight back around and get 20-30k back towards London before we stop I think it'll remove one of the biggest mental challanges.

  • Ha ha,

On my first 400k, I got down to chunks of less than a mile at one point. The theory is sound though, only do what you know you can do and see how you feel at the end of that.
