  • Not a nice way to start the week. I say person because I couldn't say for sure it was a rider. But the signs were not good.

At about a quarter to nine this morning I passed oval station northbound on the A3 and the whole area turning left toward the oval itself was cordoned off. Several police vehicles, fire brigade wagons and ambulances were in attendance. A Thames Materials (maybe?) aggregate lorry was stopped halfway around the turn and a blue tent had been erected fully obscuring the nearside of the vehicle. As I said, not good. I hope to high heaven that whoever was involved makes it through, and I wonder how on earth these terrible indcidents can be reduced.

  • hope to high heaven that whoever was involved makes it through, and I wonder how on earth these terrible indcidents can be reduced.

Me too. I hope the person makes it through.

  • I went through Oval just before then- other side so I did not see the lorry, but the air ambulance went overhead in that direction as I went down Kennington road.

  • I went through at 8.52 and the blue hoardings were still up, from what I could see, paramedics and fireman were working on whoever was stuck under the truck, no evidence it's a cyclist - but it didnt look good.
Hope who ever it is makes it, sent a chill through me.

  • That is on my route.
I hope the person is okay

  • prayers to the poor person concerned.

A couple of weeks back I was brushed against by a Thames Materials aggregate truck on Chelsea Embankment - I took details of the truck and called them.... they were extremely apologetic.... but ffs

  • i went through about 9.15. still all there. shivers. called 'er indoors.
big love to everyone out there.

  • hope whoever it was is ok, damn. Thats on my route to uni everyday, lorries are always cutting the corners in the bus lanes.

  • Fingers crossed, it seems like a awfully bad year for this kind of thing so far.

How are the stats developing for this year in comparison to others? Considering the huge increase in riders recently...

  • I went past bit before 9.45 and saw it all (there was also something cordoned off on the junction a bit further south, again fire trucks/ambulances and police all over the place)

the truck looked like it had gone well wide though... didn't look too hard though as I didn't really want to see too much, if you know what I mean.

Good luck to anyone that's involved.

  • just had a call from jim about this. apparently there is a bike still under the truck and a helmet to one side.

terrible, it seems we can't go a week without a rider down thread. i really hope everyone involved is ok.

  • This is terrible. I hope the person is ok.

Is it simply that the weather is nice and more bikes are out? Are there more trucks out? What the hell is going on out there??!?!

  • Well, there are lots of construction projects central and east London, so there's a big chance that there are more HGVs out there. I've certainly noticed more, and unless the Tories win and close down crossrail, it'll only get worse.

I hope this rider is going to be ok. It's more shitty news.

  • i don't know, but was discussing with pickle yesterday how this weather seems to make people drive like maniacs. certainly seemed the case on my ride home last night!

  • fingers crossed
truck and lorries should be banned in london during the rush hours

  • During the day

  • this weather seems to make people drive like maniacs.

+1 I have definately noticed how as soon as the sun comes out, peoples general standard of driving goes out of the window.

Anyhoo, i echo the sentiments of all of the above, I really hope the person/s involved do not become yet another HGV statistic :(

  • There needs to be a radio safety campaign that's fa sure.

  • Not sure you can blame the sun really. People were driving like fucking idiots all winter too.
I hope the rider is ok, but the presence of a blue tent suggests otherwise :(

I'm not sure what the solution is to these accidents but something needs to be done soon as they are going to become more frequent with an increase in cycling numbers

  • Oh god, here we go again.
We just had a call from South London Press about this, they have heard that the cyclist is 'critical' but have no more details.

  • God this sucks, it just seems like a weekly occurence right now, hope they make it.

  • Oh god, here we go again.

Fuck so it was a cyclist then. I went past ( brixton to kennington road ) about 8:45 and at first thought 'cyclist' but then decided it was something to do with the tube on account of the amount of fire engines, cops, ambulances etc.

  • Greetings folks,
This has just sent a deep dark chill down my spine.
I saw this lorry... it was a big green pickup/dumper truck with red lettering and I rode alongside it from Stockwell up to Oval. I think it was about 8.25ish. I pulled up at Oval having overtaken it on the approach to the junction, then crossed the junction and carried on to work as one does.
I don't know what to say except that I am counting my blessings...
    Peace and Love to everyone,
    Tim

  • This is not good news. Let's hope whoever it is pulls through.

  • Oh no :(

Really hope there is some good news soon. Thoughts are with whoever is involved.
