I have a problem with record shops. I approach them knowing what I want to look for, then as I pass through the doors a magical mind-ray wipes this information clean out of my head and I stand there puzzled for a while, perhaps leafing half-heartedly though a rack or two before leaving again.

@ Torches, would help if we knew what kinda music you were into. Most of the decent shops have now sadly closed anyway :-(

Same thing happens to me. Every time!

Thanks for all the help, I'll definately be checking all your suggestions out. And I definately have BlueQuinns problem with memory blanks too.
@ pistanator, pretty much anything really. I'm trying to pick up some records from this guy - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mulatu_Astatke which I guess you could call afrobeat. I'm tired of buying from ebay where you don't get to check the quality etc of the vinyl beforehand.

Well, Sterns list three of his albums, all currently out of stock but you can ask them to e-mail you when they are in stock.

phonica is alright.
quite like the english version of turntablelab. -

if you are looking for Mulatu Atsatke - Sounds of the Universe have a few albums on CD or vinyl. or there are plenty of secondhand places around if you have a few days to spare diggin.
I have a similar problem to BlueQ - but my memory blank leaves me purchasing a big wad of albums, then getting home and realising the one I specifically made the trip to buy isn't amongst them.

There is an old reggae record shop on Askew Rd, Shepherds Bush looks like a little aladins cave for you record heads always great sounds coming out of there.
Peckings Studio One Record Shop located at 142, Askew Road, London
W12. Nearest underground stations are Goldhawk Road (Hammersmith &
City line) and Ravenscourt Park (District Line). The shop was set up
by the late 'Daddy Peckings', an old time friend of many of the legends
in reggae, including of course Coxsone Dodd of Studio One fame. The
reggae business in the U.K. owes a large debt to Daddy Peckings for his
efforts to help establish the industry here. In fact Studio One issued
their own tribute album to him after his passing away.

Berwick Street, while not being what it used to be still has quite a few decent record stores worth checking out, Sister Ray is always worth a punt and the CD and Record exchange sometimes gives up gems for fuck all cash, and there are a few others along there which i can see in my head, but have no idea what they're called...

Flashback - Essex Rd & Crouch End
Haggle Vinyl - Essex Rd
Record Detectives - Green Lanes
Audio Gold - Hornsey
Music & Video - Notting Hill, Camden, GreenwichOriginal Mulatu LPs will be priced pretty high if they appear in these shops, def cheaper on ebay, or check vinyl vulture/VG + forums for trades. If it's new/reissue LPs then Sounds of the Universe as mentioned.

If you're after Soul, Reggae/Dub, Funk, bit of disco/boogie then the best record shop(imo) is Music Emporium on Brixton Hill, I've been going there for years.
It's a right mess but I've literally spent 4/5hrs at a time in there sifting through 1,000's of 12"s, LPs....and you can go downstairs and listen to them all on headphones so you can check before you buy :-) -

Does anyone know any good ones? I'm at a loss to find any decent ones in London that stock a good range of music.
