  • Leaning back and thinking of England? What's that gonna do?

  • Make it easier for me, sweetheart.

  • I've taken to carrying a bungee cord with an anchor at one end. When I come to a hill, I release the anchor and come to a gentle stop at the bottom, after bouncing up and down the hill for a while. Works well for me and ensures that my bike is not aesthically impaired by the addition of brakes.

  • no one has mentioned leaning forward and kicking back. we could have ended this thread so much more easily.

He doesn't have any foot retention = any way of stopping aside from the one brake he's wisely left on.

  • Best thing to do is take your feet off the pedals and scrape your soles along the road until you come to a halt.

  • Best thing to do is take your feet off the pedals and scrape your soles along the road until you come to a halt.

    But do it barefoot..

  • Braking for beginners.

  • You can boost yourself off the back of the bike.

Straighten your leg as the pedal comes to the top of the stroke so you are lifted off the saddle. At the same time push back from the bars and do a reverse leapfrog.
    Casually jog to a halt.

You may need to retrieve your bike at this point.

  • Ride down hills backwards.

Pushing against the pedals to brake in the forward direction will feel more natural, therefore its easier.

  • When learning to skid, ALWAYS. ALWAYS, and i cant emphasise it enough, always practice in heavy traffic on Clerkenwell rd around 6pm....that is the rule isn't it?

so so many brakeless morons yesterday fighting to stop before their head become a fixture in the grill of various cement trucks

This also allows you to see what's happening behind you when you change lanes without having to look over your shoulder. And it prevents sudden attacks of vertigo that could otherwise cause you to lose control of your bike... The approach has much to recommend it.

I've never seen this, I want to see I want to see! I've got the day off so... 6pm you say?

  • To be serious. Best way to learn to stop brakeless is to go to the top of a long steep hill and start riding down.

You will find a way to brake.

I can highly reccomend this method of learning!

But then he'd have probably tried it in traffic, failed and ended up under a bus or under Mikec's wheels at the Foundry........ pick whichever you feel is worse......

  • Squirels are good too, just stick one in your spokes when you need to stop, works a treat.

    ....on the dot

see you there, I'll be the one on the brakeless/clipless unipack undertaking bendybuses

man people were so much more polite two years ago.

  • Cheers for all the guidance chaps, spent all day playing on the bike in the city, and after a few iffy moments it seems my stoping is finally coming together! As for the harpoon? after much searching through bs106 pt1 1992, this must be in the small print?

    Happy riding chaps..............

  • This one? I've never seen it before so I will post it here for the first time, ever.
