Grrr, everybody else has stolen some of my thunder. But there's still plenty left.
Firstly, the singular is 'parenthesis' and the plural is 'parentheses'.
Secondly, brackets are essential for switches in forum posts, such as
strikethroughor quoted text.Thirdly, and most importantly, brackets are essential for crucial distinctions between vital emoticons, i.e. :] or :). Surely you can appreciate that we'd be much poorer without being able to signal these different facial expressions via typography.
Fourthly, on that PODMAS nonsense, the surname of the guy who was best in maths in my year at school was Bodmann.
