I hope the WD40 was a joke, keep that shit away from your bottom bracket. Its not a lubricante and will just make the problem worse.

@nimbles, all bottom brackets have their own spanner. there is quite a few different types.

could alo be a loose chainring bolt, i know you said where you thought it might come from, but you never can really tell. and don't listen to all thee other donkey's they know nuffink.

hippy's first choice sounds good, bring it to west's and i'll give it a good shoe-in.
