In general, though, there seem to be a few posts on this thread from people who are missing really basic and quite cheap tools; crank pullers, lock ring tools (fixed or cassette), BB tools etc. who need to HTFU
i have a crank puller, just an extremely cheap one which the threading got wrecked on (managed to use it in the end). Also, you've gotta remember that there are a lot of people (who aren't feeble minded) who have bought a bike ready built, either otp or second hand, who don't immediately need any bike specific tools and have no desire to build or work on bikes. And anyway, if you don't want to lend out your tools dont bother, but i think its a good thing that people are willing to help out.

no worries dude.
i also forgot a lighter, so had to walk 20 mins to the garage at 1am last night to get a lighter, my parents don't have a single lighter or box of frikkin matches in the whole house!
gas hob? grill?

I don't get it - either people don't want to work on bikes, in which case there are plenty of shops who are more than happy to take their money, or they do want to work on bikes, in which case owning a few basic tools seems to be easier than relying on the kindness of strangers.
I have some expensive tools which I wouldn't expect everybody to own, e.g. headset press, and some archaic ones which somebody might need only once to dismantle an old bike, e.g. the FAG BB tool referenced up thread, which I'm happy to let people use, but my sense of charity doesn't extend to crossing town to help somebody who is too idle, stupid or parsimonious to spring for a tool which will save its own cost in workshop fees the first time he uses it.

its not that they are 'relying' on the kindness of strangers, i'm sure if people wanted to they could get these tools themselves, the fact that they know what a crank puller or bb tool is probably means they know how to use it and where to get it. But firstly, tools like these don't get used that often so while its only a few quid that gets spent, thats still money that could be saved. secondly, no one is asking you to 'cross town' to lend them anything. The reason we specify where we are in london is so that tools can be shared localy and it is generally expected that he who borrows the tool goes to wherever the lender prefers, and anyway i've met people (clearly kinder and more charitable as you put it, who have cycled a long distance to lend a tool. Finally, we should embrace the fact that this is a community, part of the joy in lending and borrowing tools is meeting new people and sharing a passion for cycling!

I think we have a culture clash, and possibly a clash of generations. When I were a lad, probably before you were born, I would sit at my father's knee while he regreased a bottom bracket on the back kitchen table. The Campagnolo tools 712, 712-1 and 713 required to do this were objects of beauty just as much as the 151mm PCD Record cranks.
That he served an apprenticeship as a tool maker probably instilled in him, and by osmosis in me, a sense that a tool was just as important a part of the marriage as the workpiece to which it was applied, and it was therefore reasonable to spend on tools as freely as on parts, and to enjoy ownership of tools as much as ownership of parts. This is perhaps old fashioned, now that parts are modules which are discarded rather than serviced, but in the olden days a BB, hub or headset might serve 20 years, with perhaps a couple of changes of balls, but it would be dismantled and regreased every year.
Having been brought up this way, it would not occur to me to own a part for which I didn't own the corresponding tool, regarding the two as so intimately related. If a new part requires a tool I don't already have, I regard the cost of the tool as an integral part of the cost of acquisition of the said part.

whatever generation you are from, i think we can agree that people and time are more valuable than tools. i can understand that tools and cycling are a great passion of yours but i think on this forum there is a real sense of community. maybe you could use this as a medium to share your passion for such things.

This is well said. I'm a tool and fixing nut but it takes all sorts to make a community, and I understand that many people find mechanics tedious. There are people I have met on here who I know would help me out in all sorts of ways if I asked them, with time, advice or expertise, and I give what i can in return.

That looks like an FR-2 - for old skool suntour cassettes - I have one. Based in SE1. PM me if you want to arrange pickup. They're not particularly nice to use - have a read of what Sheldon has to say before you attempt anything.

Mine's in Slough; hope you find one nearer :-)
Do you need the freewheel remover just once or in an ongoing way? You can have mine (Genuine Suntour CroMo tool) for the postage cost if you're going to need one in future, it's no good to me here.

Hello, I've just taken delivery of a new frame and it has an old Campag BB on it. I went into Condor last week and they didn't have the right tools in stock. I'd prefer to do this myself (as opposed to taking it to a shop) so if anyone can help us there'd be a few beers in exchange?
btw. In terms of sharing the wealth I have Campag Veloche BB tools and some other external BB tools if anyone wants to borrow those.
ps. based in West Norwood and Shoreditch

Hi all, does anyone in the Greenwich area (or close by) have a 1" headset press and crown race setter I could use? I'll bring beer/cider of your choice as no home mechanicing job is complete without it.
Cheers.

"Tool library / tool exchange. Post what you got and where you are"
Got almost everything (no Campy milling, press-in and threading tools).
Only problem is: I live in The Netherlands...Lacking brazing equipment and shotblasting equipment too, otherwise I could make my own frames again.

Hi, I'm having real trouble trying to get some old zeus cranks off a zeus bottom bracket. The clearance between the crank and the nut is really tight and I think it's a 16mm nut (no vernier, just a ruler) does anyone have anything that will get in there? normal sockets or box spanners that I have won't fit. I've been all over London with no luck so far.

Try a garage/motorcycle repair - many spark plugs, esp. Japanese, need a thin-walled 16mm socket
Buy here for ~£4

Pictures blocked by work firewall- which BB is it?
I can help you out, but in live in NL.
But since I do have 2 similar tools, I can sell one...
But usually you need this tool once in 5 or 10 years, so it may be waste of money.
