120 Days of Sodom, and comparing it to Pier Paolo Pasolini's recently un-banned film Salo which is based on the book. The film is so-so, and has some dark moments, but the subject matter isn't handled very well.
The book is better, but some times I get the feeling that De Sade was writing like a teenager out to shock. It's got its merits but I don't think it's all its hype.
Fail.
Salo was never intended to be an accurate biopic of de sade's novel. Pasolini used its framework yes, but Salo is primarily an anti-fascist film.
actually, anti-fascist is the biggest understatement possible. The film is very possibly the best ever example of the use of cinema as an insult. No wonder it got Pasolini run over (by his own car).
