Totally. The only problem is: nobody in London sells the bloody things loose! Grrr.

  • I've never had the sleeve. It's not entirely necessary, but then I haven't got cuts through the shell.

But you really don't need to worry. Put yr BB in, ride around until your get your sleeve. Nuttin bad's gonna happen. Although, might be worth taping over the holes as its raining.

  • Got bored of reading after the first couple of posts, but I ran a campag loose ball BB for about 8 months without a sleeve, with quite a large BB cutout.

Re-greased it a few months back and been running without a sleeve again for a few months.

'Back in the day' people generally just chucked them in the bin and never fitted them.

  • I made one myself with a plastic ginger beer bottle cut down to the right width and overlapped twice, it's still in the bike and does the job perfectly. The sleeves are impossible to find in London and i only found one website that sold them, everyone else just told me buy a new bottom bracket to get one!

  • Exactly what I've been hearing ("most people just buy a new bb" from Odge, or "ha! nobody rides those anymore" from the Condor chap).
Jamaican Mule with lunch then, I guess?

Ho-hum, afternoon bike mechanic sessions under the influence. It's a hard life…

  • Plastics no fun, can't you find a beer can to use? Much sharper edges!

It's great all the what i call "proper (old boy) cyclists" bikes that i take loose cup and cone b/b's out of, always have a home-made metal sleeve in them. Works great, unlike cardboard, which i found in someone's shell one day.. wet cardboard, nice!

  • A bit of a 2liter coke bottle is the way to go, diet coke bottle if you're a weight weenie ;-). I tend to glue it in place into the BB shell.
    Good luck,
    S.

  • So I opted for a trimmed chocolate milk bottle until I can track down a proper sleeve next week. And it looks like it held up nicely against yesterday's muddy, pouring onslaught… I'll let you know when I swap it out…

  • You could try some canneloni tube, or failing that but a spring roll, bite off either end and suck out the midle bit. Voila!

Don't be fucking stupid! Stop wasting his time with useless ideas.

Now, removing the sausage from a sausage roll and using the pastry outer to protect the bearings - That is a good idea.

and it slowly releases grease to keep everything running smoothly!

  • Hi,

I'm looking for a sleeve for a Gipiemme Special Sprint Bottom Bracket, if anyone has anything suitable I'd be very grateful.
