The guy made contact by e-mail yesterday, saying he was happy for me to return it for a full refund. He did seem to hint that my expectations were too high, but if I'm returning it I don't mind too much what he thinks.
He hasn't replied to my e-mail asking when I can drop it back, but it seems that the situation has improved slightly at least. Still pretty shoddy though - really slow on the uptake and not the easiest person to contact.
