  • any SE London riders ever stumble upon Willenhall Road SE18? Unfreakinbelievable... tiny too, and that was was somehow topped by other Woolwich/Plumstead horrors - I walked the whole of Eglinton Hill (nice views acroos London tho')... my legs almost Hulk'd out my jeans... ridiculous coming back down Shooter Hill tho!

Never been up either of those particular ones but have done many on the back roads around there so know there are a few steep ones.

Where abouts are you? I'm Woolwich Dockyard. I've started see a few more people on bikes in the area in the last year or so and even some brave fixed gear riders out this way too.

  • No, I'm in London Bridge, but I got some nice peeps up those hills, never normally ride up there, usually meet lower down for beers! Saw a bunch of fixed folk coming off the ferry as I was going north last month... somethings brewing! Isn't that screaming lady territory??

I suspect not4sale may be able to tell some tales of riding fixed up Eglinton Hill. I've only ever gone up it on gears. Never rode up Willenhall Road but I do remember it as being very steep from visiting a friend who lived in the road at the top of it.

  • I've been off my bike for a year due to a bad cruciate ligament injury. Now commuting from Dartford to the Woolwich ferry. Still finding Shooters Hill a struggle in the evenings although I managed to get over it in one tonight!(I avoid it in the mornings and cut across and over Plumstead Common) Not hardcore like some of you lot but an achievement for me anyway.

    Peace

If you're doing that ride fixed I'd be using Plumstead Common both ways. I spotted someone riding fixed yesterday afternoon in Crayford, around the Acorn Ind. Est. You perchance?

  • Can't believe this thread is still going. The week before this one I was down with fever and shivers, bad flu symptoms, the lot. On the 'last day' of my flu, I started to go stir crazy, and went for a ride no matter what. Managed to cycle around for 3 hours, while forgetting to eat and drink. Went up Tulse Hill, and felt REALLY shaky. I guess that was all of it at once: Flu, lack of carbs, lack of water, lack of training ...

Two days after I managed to click out my back, hence no riding since then. But that's another story ...

EDIT: Next week, if I can ride again, I'll make myself suffer a lot :)

  • I used to go down/up Succombs Hill on my way to/from school every day.
That hill is [st]scary[/st] fun in a car, let alone on a bike!

    Fixed.

No not me. You might see me wobbling about in that area though. On One Pompino, dodgy hat, 2 brakes and proud of it!!

Ha ! tell me about it :) 5 days a week - but I saw someone coming up Shootershill this morning who I've not seen for a while - an elderly woman on a 'sensible' bike (basket up front) really struggling up the hill- she probably does this every day and has done for years - brilliant!

  • If you're doing that ride fixed I'd be using Plumstead Common both ways.

I thought about that but whichever way you go to the common there's a nasty hill. John Wilson Street into Academy Road and then left onto Shooters Hill seemed best to me. Do you know a better way? Incidently did a call in Brookhill Road today so took the opportunity to drive up Willenhall Road afterwards. Glad I did 'cos I now know to avoid it at all costs (unless i change the gearing to 38-30 and set up camp halfway up for an overnight stop!)

    Peace

  • only seen Shooters Hill the once... one look and turned back lol

Yeah I know what you mean! I'm only riding 48-18 but it's still tough at the top. Coming down t'other side's fun trying to stop your knees hitting your chin! That's why I've got 2 brakes. Keep trying not to use the rear in the misguided belief that I'll eventually get a nice BJ track frameset and run it with 1 brake, but the cruel reality of it is that i'm destined to remain a commutenger on my bi-braked Pompino lol

  • I ride two brakes on my fillmore, and we're not alone. Oliver rides two brakes as well, if I remember right.

    Hope you're healing up OK.

If that lady you spotted looks like she just came out of the bike shop, ie brand new flouro gear, looks to be somewhere about 60 with grey hair, I see her every morning somewhere between the old water tower on the Brook site and Blackheath Standard and did spot her once on her way up the hill when I was a bit late (I usually go over the Hill at 6.30). I swear she never gets over 5mph. I've only been spotting her this year although I've been using that stretch of road for many more. Got to say I really, really admire her and may 'steal' a snap for the chics on bikes thread ;)

To avoid Shooters Hill, I would go down Nightingale Place into Plumstead Common Road, right into Kirkham Street, right again into Swingate Lane and then Glenmore Road up to Welling. Easy peasy :)
Nightingale Place is the only 'real' hill on that route but is fairly short by comparrison to Shooters Hill.

OK thanks, I'll try that tomorrow.

  • Head straight out along the A2 to Shoters Hill and up to Welling. Not very steep but several hills in a row, of a fair distance.

Arse monkeys - at 42:16, Blackheath Hill makes my legs do a hurty-hurty thing!! I've tried various ways home - the hill up through the park isn't great either, Maze Hill is ok, Vanbrugh Hill is a fucker on the middle bit, still haven't beaten that at my gear ratio and Westcombe Hill is very do-able, possibly the easiest of the lot. Haven't tried Lewisham Hill, or the one that comes up the winding street and out The Rangers House.

Anyone who lives near there and wants to practice hills in short burts could go up and down and round in very quick succession. Probably a good training ground in fact.

  • Yep I sometimes go up Vanbrugh for a little stretch. It's just a shame it isn't longer.

Shootershills, as mentioned above is nice one too, not very steep but long enough to get you puffing hard / vomiting:)

  • Hope you're healing up OK.

Yeah thanks - healing up but very slowly - still off work - knees a problem :(

Sounds like the same lady - about 7.30 - 8 ish (thats the time btw :)) - you could actually walk along side her as she cycles up the hill so snaps shouldn't be a problem.

Theres a bloke I've seen training in Greenwich Park (the main road bit up the hill) its only a short burst but he did it three times in the time it took me to get up.
(Oh shit that ripe for 'fixing')

  • I find the hill in Greenwich Park OK. It gets steeper towards the second half and I ride up as far as I can sat down then pace myself up the rest stood up. I don't push too hard because vomitting in public is so undignified.

  • I ride two brakes on my fillmore, and we're not alone. Oliver rides with two brakes as well, if I remember right.

    Yes (if you mean me).

  • Yep

  • Brockley view is ridiculously steep, don't think I've ever seen anyone try it on a bike.
