i'm actually a lock thief, so i prefer to cut through the bike.
(and the post, obviously, for the pedants).

a cheap bike designed to jump on kerbs (or a bandwagon which has already left town)
Ha!

Yes it is, but so are many bmx frames, that doesn't make it or them any less strong. Shins em and Ma3k's bikes get a lot of abuse no doubt, as far as i'm aware though they don't go bombing stair sets all the time/ hitting wall rides, hopping off stuff and doing bmx type stuff on their fixed bikes, i'm not taking anything away from Surly frames as I think they are great frames, but if i'm jumping down a 6 set of stairs I would want a plug or a cutter underneath me not a bob jackson, or a blb own brand.
You know nothing.4130 yes it's dented but it's still going strong 5ish years later. Abused with Polo 5 times a week. Reapeated highspeed crashes into other bikes & walls will take more out of a bike than the shit you guys do.
My steamrollers also done stair sets and big drops because it used to be my only bike and I don't just like road riding & polo.
Shit is strong and as the guy hasn't said he wants to do tricks your point is mute anyway, the steamroller is a solid street bike. It also doesn't look as flash as most of the newer trick specific frames whcih has to be a good thing if you're locking it up in London's famous London.

Cheers for all the replies, to answer the questions of tricks, no im not looking to buy a bike to do tricks on. I only want it bombproof because i can be a clumsy fucker, and id like the bike to out last me, or at least be re-weldable, incase the mood takes me to do a truck driver off a double stair set. From my opening Q, I am predominantly a mtb rider, so i have based my choices on brands that i know, volume and subrosa (good bmx's) koxx (amazing trials bikes) bandwagons or not. I want to get a fixed bike for its simplicity, not for tyre clearance on barspins, brooks saddles or mag wheels

just buy a half decent OTP fixed like a langster or bowery. pick the one with the best frame warranty (probably giant) if you are worried about it breaking. those bikes you picked out are just bandwagon jumping by brands who make mtb's so they can sell a fixie to somebody who already owns a mtb/bmx/trials bike. they are heavy and overpriced for what they are.

I never once dissed the steamroller Em, 4130 is the mutts nutts, all I was saying was I hadn't personally ridden with anyone or knew of people that had thrashed them in the same way as plugs/cutters, Ted for instance had a plug frame for nearly 2 years that he never broke, whilst snapping and destroying loads of other stuff in the process, and I don't know many people that go as big as he does on fixed.
I really like plugs/cutters and I really like surlys, my one and only point was to say that frames like BLB's own brand, and bob jackson are just as strong as the above 3 frames was ridiculous. -

Anyways to the OP, I don't think you can go wrong with a plug, cutter, or a steamroller if you want something that will stand up to day to day abuse.

doesn't tony fast ride a surly at least some of the time?! if so of course it can take abuse cause he does tricks off nutty big stuff and isn't the smallest of blokes either! anyway best thing to do is buy the best quality arts you can they then shoudn't break :-)
-
• #67
he did have a steamroller yes
but with brooklyn forks -

I hear Surly Steamrollers are really solid. I'm going to be buying one within the next couple of weeks and have done a fair bit of research and they seem to tick all the boxes for me.
brother rides one. they are bombproof, heavy, versatile. Very nice looking dropouts and fork crown, so if built right it can be a pretty looking ride. Not a tight frame, geometrically, though.

the surly is Double Butted Generic 4130. the charge appears to be straight gauge 4130.
Both have the same basic tendency to crack at the welds over time, but the charge will be stiffer and less likely to buckle if you crash into a wall head on.
The volume is built like a tank, isn't it? I can't find any details on the site, but they say it's built "like a BMX". god know what that means. I guess it's similar to the Charge.
Frankly, I can't say much from experience about the Volume or the Charge. I commented on the Surly above, and that would be my reccomendation (of these) for hard city riding including dropping off anything up to a foot regularly. If i wanted to do stair sets and actual drops for fun, i'd get a different kind of bike altogether.

He rides a milwaukee bikes bruiser frameset for all his heavy trick riding, which is a heavy duty GTFU frame with unicrown MTB style forks..

I still want one of those for polo.
But then I'd want S&S couplers for it too. -

another option is on-one pompino, sturdy work-horse for good money, especially if you've come from mtb's

But then I'd want S&S couplers for it too.Why would you want to convert it to a folding bike for polo? They are pretty sexy looking frames though, if I wasn't massively lusting after the 14 trick frame I probably would have put some money aside for one of them.

still searching for a suitable bike. I spoke gto evans cycles today, who seem to be the only people importing the subrosa malum fixed. its not due in the country till august, which is a bit to long to wait for me.The Surly Steamroller and the Volume creedence are still the frontrunners. However i saw a build over the weekend which was running a 26" mountainbike frame and fork but with 700cc wheels. Which got me thinking, could i do a similar conversion to a se bikes OM flyer http://www.tritoncycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m10b190s277p5359&z=6221 the clearance to the rear of the the frame looks ok, just not sure about that of the forks. So if anyone has done anything similar, i would be gratefull if you let me know. Cheers again.

i did it to a charge stove. ridiculously heavy, too heavy in fact.
Bombproof in the city = use bike to twist locks open when it's stolen in the first week.
