It's funny, but for me Ventoux is a hostile place and Alpe d'Huez a calm, peaceful place. I think it depends a lot on the weather and the expectations you have. I've ridden the Alpe in very different conditions and at different stages of a ride and it can be straightforward or the hardest climb you've ever done.
I've only done the Ventoux once, and swore it was a once in a lifetime experience as it was an unrelenting slog for no scenic reward, but it looks like I'll be returning to it this summer to ride the Etape.
