I wasn't bigging up the US, its recent record is less then peachy.

every country has its own redneck racist right-wing retard political party. usually they're easy enough to ignore.

however, the danger comes when mainstream right-of-centre parties (ie the Tories) start seeing the right wing of their supporters drifting towards the extremist party, as the mainstream party then often pushes its own policies further right to win those voters back.

this was the case in Australia c.1998 with One Nation dragging the Liberal party (conservative side of politics, in government at the time) towards more right wing policies relating to immigrants, asylum seekers, indigenous australians etc. Former PM John Howard had always been a racist little cunt, but the rest of his party were so shitscared of losing their redneck voters that they basically agreed to anything as long as it meant the rednecks voted for them.

this is a real danger in the UK at the moment, because the Tories will not want to lose the fringe Tory/BNP sympathisers, as they are desperate to beat Labour and need every vote they can get.
