  • Could I get a peer-review on this map?
    http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2840339
Don't know the countryside down there, have tried to steer between the hills except for that last crazy switchback going up to the cliffs at the end.
Took for the start half(over the Medway) from one of Tommy's routes.
If there is a better way please somebody let me know.

This looks like a solid days-worth of riding but the views at the end should be worth it.

  • Your route appears to go up Hollingbourne Hill. That will be interesting on fixed - certainly doable in the right gear, but maybe not very welcome as part of an all-day ride. Bear in mind that you can easily hit 40mph when freewheeling down it - a friend of mine hit 47 down there (I lacked the bulk to go much over 40).

  • i notice you have to drop down the 'downs' down bluebell hill and then go straight back up near detling hill (anyone with gears bring them! anyone thinking of doing it brakeless? i would think again.)as there doesn't seem to be a way of keeping the height unless you stay north of the m2 and skirt walderslade. but that means conurbation, chavs, industrial/housing estates so hills and trees is probably better
there is a good pub called the hook and hatchet at Hucking that you pass by but it's a bit soon in the journey to stop. the roads/views along the north downs are really nice, if you have the weather for it it should be a good ride.

    Ha ha chavs in walderslade you got that right plus lots of tinkers at detling and bluebell hill :~}

  • I'd love to try and do this but I'll have to date check.

Would be really good if someone who comes has a GPS unit or would lend one to help with navigating would come too being as it's not a well known route. Save too much stopping and starting route checking.

Route Looks nice MA3K, but I only know the first few lanes near Swanley e.c.t personally.

Are we riding there or trying to make new idiosyncratic 'friends' ?

    Oi! Not ride not talk.

    Charming :@

  • personally i would cross the stour valley further up but seeing as most of you probably do not know the area then going up the hill oustide wye up to the crown will take you to the devils kneeling trough with views right across the romney marsh so worth it for the view. the roads will be quieter/narrower the further north you go from the edge of the downs ridge.

it's only 77 miles should only take 4 hours or so plus a bit of stoppage time. would definately reccomend gears if you have them.

  • 4 hours and then some...

  • 8 hours and then some...

    Remember Canterbury?!

Looks a good route, MA3K. After the Medway the route for a while follows the same path as the British Cyclosportive (the Etape stage of the Tour de France when it was in Kent) of 2007. Some nice views of the Medway along there. And we also use some of the road of the Canterbury ride north of Lenham. Those sections were a bit narrow, but should be Ok.

My brother may be interested in this, but if he isn't, I should be able to borrow his GPS.

  • average of 9mph?!?
maybe you need to bring some lights too.

  • On the Canterbury ride we left Greenwich at 10.30am and got there at 6pm. It was just over 100k.
