Last nights efforts included hammer and screwdriver, putting the back wheel against a wall and jumping on the pedal lots, half an hour of skidding with the lockring loosened and finally a dose of WD40 finally allowed me to remove the sprocket. Thought for a moment that I may have to break out the angle grinder in the absence of a vice but it finally gave up it's grip.
Now I have my lovely new Surly ring on, which will hopefully last for ever.
