  • Her identity has now been confirmed. There is a headline about it in the evening standard. Fortunately there is no sign of sickening comments

  • Rip

  • V sad news. poor woman and poor family RIP

on the lorry driver front - I came through Hammersmith roundabout last week and as always took the outside lane, on my right the lorry apexed the corner to the extent he clipped the railings on the inside and tipped the lorry nearly 30*. i had visions of it falling straight over on top of me. but it bounced back. i could see his face in the mirror and he didn't once look back.
this driver may very well have thought he just caught railings, took his eye off what he was doing and cut corners to disasterous effect. time will tell - if he comes forward then we know he didn't see it. Lets not send out the hanging party just yet else we are no better than that tool commenting on ES

  • WVM,Thanks for asking this. I know a lot of friends of her and I know that they would be devastated to read it.

You are welcome. We are all so sorry to hear of this tragic accident. Please pass on all our sympathies to friends and family. This must be absolutely heartbreaking.

  • So very sad.

Deepest sympathies to her family and friends.

  • I know this is a terrible thing to say but why does it feel as though justice would happen only if the victim happened to the child of a minister or someone else in similar position?

  • minister as in church minister or governmental minister?

youre not alone. i often have the same thought running through my mind. if there's bus lane where it happened drive in it at the wrong time and see how quickly they send you a picture of yourself with a fine attached.
there's no revenue to be gained from dead pedestrians or cyclists.

    sorry if i missed something

  • I guess MultiG means that that would make the Government/Parliment sit up and listen to what every cyclist is already saying, i.e. DO SOMETHING TO MAKE THE ROADS SAFER FOR EVERYONE?

  • are we going to do something?

  • I know this is a terrible thing to say but why does it feel as though justice would happen only if the victim happened to the child of a minister or someone else in similar position?

No it's completely realistic. Things only happen if the people in charge are first made aware of a problem and then secondly are passionate enough about it to pursue it and inspire other misters to also act on it.

  • Rode past there tonight. Friends/family were stood in quiet reflection around the scene

    So tragic

Given that the sliproad leads to the A2, which leads to the ferries, which leads to Europe, it could be that the driver is in Munich now, unaware he did anything much wrong other than twonk some railings and then legging it to avoid having to pay for them.

He may have been stupid but he might not be as callous as we are suggesting.

  • I would've think that the lorry have some mark on the side, like blood due to the accident.

The police still hasn't got anything from the CCTV??

  • That the thing about cctv it's largely useless.

  • ....unless you go in a bus lane or park on double yellows, then it seems to work

  • Individual cameras can be useless but across the broader network the odds of useful information increase. In this kind of incident there should be an immediate lockdown on all public CCTV within a three mile radius and appeal for privately owned footage as well.

If were going to have a "surveillance state", we really need to be using it to our advantage.

    +1 on both.

how does a large blue tauped truck/lorry vanish?

    its makes my stomach turn.

  • I hate to say it but I get the feeling the extent of the police investigation is to check one near by cctv camera find nothing and then just put out an appeal, asking for witnesses. I doubt much proactive investigation has been done.

  • Maybe a bit of that 8million spent on policing tamil protesters could be spent on an apeal to HGV companies across europe to call for anyone who knows.
it's tragic, but not malicious, and it highlights how the state cares for its pockets and not a lot else. it's a numbers game, you'll find more people die from complications of medial care and adverse side effects to drugs than die riding bikes on our roads. more probably die of household related incidents to be honest.

the gvt (as shit as they are) can only listen to a few lobbying groups, making the roads safer is something no expense-fiddling-greedy-spineless-prat will ever come out and try to achieve.

its down to you to look after yourself and accept a tragedy is exactly that

  • the lorry was obviously either making a delivery or picking up.

  • thats it, with a good few ton in the back, heavy rattling from the trailer, well cushion cab, radio on the go and focusing on the road ahead you can see how it can be dismissed as a kerb or sign.
then by the time he parked up it could be dark, him tired and part way back in europe.. then it could be anything

Very sad. Obviously I feel for her colleagues anyway, but if you've encouraged people to cycle to work and this happens it must make you feel terrible, even though you know you did the right thing. I encourage people I know to cycle all the time, including at work. I'd be devastated if they were killed in an incident like this.

  • they still never find the lorry?? not even tracking it down by following the CCTV camera of each destination it went??
