Two different memory mechanisms. I did a huge psych profile once to find out why I was rubbish at school (exec summary: dyspraxia in one of its many forms) and was amazed to find out that I'm very, very good at a test involving repeating a string of random numbers, heard once, backwards. Sadly, to make up for this extremely handy skill, I have a 2D visual memory in the fourth percentile :-(
