  • Hey all, not able to make this class but is this likely ot happen again in the future? got some hubs and rims to lace up, was gunna pay someone but this seems like a much beter idea!!

  • I'd be happy to do it again (well, lets see how tomorrow goes). Just get 3-5 people together.

  • i'll be up for the next one, my first attempt was a joke ask Dale! so it'd be good and wanted to join this group but cant do it today.

  • I've just joined this forum and its the only one I've seen with this idea. I've been building wheels for 25+ years and have loads of stuff if anyone is looking for something in particular.
A top-tip for anyone starting wheelbuilding is to get a spoke threading tool such as a Cyclus or similar. Saves a fortune in spokes over the years.

  • Very happy with my new front wheel. Thanks to ehren_fried_chicken for taking the class and helping me with truing it.

  • @decay: Have you got the pics?

@rauri&mullerbugs: I think tomasito and texas wanted to join today's but couldn't. Maybe PM them and we could arrange a day. Something like two weeks from now would be a good time.

Do you mean tools or components?

  • There seems to be sufficient interest for another class. I'm going to propose Sat May 23 and/or Sun May 24. That should give you enough time to get bits. Stick your name on the list if you want to come:

    1. Rauri?
    2. mullerbugs?

Maybe say what day would be better for you.

Components mostly. Older hubs, sprint rims, modern clinchers like IRD Cadence Aeros etc. Tools, I can certainly help people out if needed.

  • Hey well up for it can do 23rd flexible on time too but not 24th unfortunately.

    Great.

How does the spoke threading tool work? You buy long spokes in bulk and then just cut and chase threads as you need it?

    1. Rauri?
    2. mullerbugs (if on May 23)
  • Argh. I can do the evening of the 24th (after 8:00pm) but not before. I'm in swansea from the 20th to the 24th, I get back at 5, but I would need to go home and grab my parts...

  • Yes, just fire the spoke in, lube it up and thread away. The Cyclus and Hozan ones roll the threads. This is great for straight guage spokes but you need to watch the length of the butt on d/b spokes.

I'm interested in this, but don't finish college til 28th. If it gets put off by another week, PM me. Cheers!

Oh, also.. I'll be building some 24" wheels. Your spoke calculator says 237.3 for the rear and 238.1 for the front. That link to ebay has 238 boxes but no smaller ones. would those be ok for both wheels at a push?

  • I'm going on holiday on May 30, so would have to be afterwards. I think you'll get away with the spokes .7mm too long.

Mullerbugs, if we get together another 2-3 people for the 23rd we'll do it then.

  • ok mate no probs may be bad weekend with it being a bank holiday, not in any kinda rush so if it a case of rescheduling then thats fine by me.

  • hi, pls excuse my absense, have been away, this weekend isn't great for me, i'm actually hectic for the next 4 weeks so after that would suit. If there are enough to go ahead before that then go for it and i'll try and rally some troops for a mid june sesh if thats do-able fried chicken?

  • Alright, lets aim for mid-June.

  • I'm a definite for this if it's before the last two weeks of june.

  • Hey guys, how about Sunday June 14 for the next class?

  • I'm definately interested.
But as a bit of an amateur I think I'll need a few pointers on where to get the stuff you guys are talking about above!

For tools go to chainreactions or wiggle.

How much money have you got to spend on the wheels? SJS Cycle, cyclebasket and outspoken cycles are good for parts.

  • Wow, what a great day today has been. OK, I missed the sun, but I did have an amazing day playing with new tools... from never having built a wheel to three in one day, I have earned my beer. :^)

  • Anyone use one of these?

If not, what's the best way to judge spoke tension, especially on older rims with washers or without doudle eyelets?

Yes, I have one. I guess I'd have to admit to being a bit of a tool fetishist... it was a Christmas present a couple of years ago from my sister, only got around to using it for the first time yesterday! Do you need it? Nope. Is it nice to have? Sure.

Just judge by tone when you flick the spokes and by squeezing adjacent spokes together. Got a well built wheel already? Then use that as a guide.

I'm definately good for the 14th if anyone else is. Lets start a list!
