Smaller things fit into bigger gaps, but bigger things don't fit into smaller gaps. Ask my lover.

Yeh, go on, ask me
-
• #55
He means me.

He said 'lover' not 'stalker''; still making no progress in therapy then?
-
• #57
I killed my therapist and hid her body in mine.
That, to me at least, is progress, quite how you are defining it I have no clue.

My current project bike has a 122 BCD chainring (Stronglight 93). It's a bit of a weird size, apparently now obsolete according to Sheldon.
The chainring is 3/32, I managed to find one place that sells them but not in 1/8. So will it be OK to run that with 1/8 chain and cog? From what I've read on other sites it will, although people are saying it will be noisy. How noisy?! Has anyone here done this? Or does anyone know where I can get a 1/8 chainring in 122 BCD if such a thing exists?

Yup, the combination of 1/8 chain on 3/32 is perfectly fine.
It's the other way around that doesn't work.

I had this same problem recently, although didn't have the definative authority of Velocio to make my mind up.
I ended up going 3/32 Chainring, chain and cog. It probably helped that i was buying all parts from scratch and didn't have to fit to existing parts.

Cheers, did a search but did not find anything helpful, I'll check this out...

you'll find it runs a lot smoother with a 3/32nd chainwheel and 1/8th chain/sprocket

Had roughly the same thing myself on an old build.
Egg will make you a custom chain ring to whatever width and bcd you need, just don't expect it to be cheap.
I investigated and ended up running 3/32nd, and to be honest it was fine.
(Although I always knew it should be 1/8th all the way, but hey....)

Hi there, I have an old Surgino GT crankset that I am going to use for my fixie project. How can I tell if its 1/8" or 3/32"?
-
• #66
thickness, try and put a chain around it. if you have a 3/32 it will not go on a 1 1/8th
-
• #67
Cheers, the answer is....its 3/32.
-
• #68
you can still use an 8th chain on the chainring and use 8th sprocket on the back.

Thanks, I have just ordered a 15t fixed sprocket for it.

As above, i know this can be done but will it cause any real problems? My reason is that the chainline is going to be slightly out on my new build and was thinking that using a 1/8 chain will give me slightly more play laterally?
I currently run a 1/8 chain on my beater with a 1/8 sprocket and 3/32 chainring with no problems but the chainline is pretty much bang on (shimano freehub with spacer kit).
Cheers.

bad idea
-

Roger that.
I know i should go and sort my chainline out but that will involve buying a new crankset and i don't have the £100+ atm. I'll see just how out it is when my rear sprocket turns up (hopefully by the weekend) - it may not be too bad when i offer all the parts up, but i'm not that optimistic lol!

you can run a 1/8th on a 3/32 chain-ring/cog. I've done a hundred miles odd using a 1/8th on 3/32, seems fine. iirc you can't use 3/32 chain on 1/8 chain-ring/cog.
-
• #74
It's not a problem running 1/8" on thinner cogs/chainrings as stated above, but I don't think it will help your chainline-problem... I think you'd be better of running something designed for a bad chainline, eg. a 3/32" chain for gears..
-
• #75
O.T.T. - Yes your remember correctly, you cannot run a 3/32 chain on 1/8 running gear.
Haj - Cheers man, so if i go for a "10-speed" 3/32 chain i may get away with it? I know geared bikes generally run the chain at an angle the majority of the time (obvious why). You reckon this would cause me any problems with the chain popping off when reverse peddling?
Good point; my guess is that using a 1/8th whip on a 3/32nd cog won't be perfect but will be good enough. If I am wrong, I never said that.
I don't know how often you take your cog off but probably not often enough that 'good enough' won't be good enough.
