It is pretty small! 54 c to top on seattube. Hopefully should do me OK @ 5' 9" ish

Should be fine, I have a 54cm racer and I'm about the same height as you. Doesn't feel that small when you're on it but next to my fixie it looks very mini.

Yet another reason why hub gears are superior to derallieurs. You can shift while stationary.
another is that "hub gears" is a damn sight easier to spell.
Serious question, why aren't hub gears more widely used ?

slight thread de-rail but here is a pic of my new geared steed. This is the first bike I'll have had with gears since 2002 - looking forward to some high speed action!
