  • 'big' ...relative to which village fete exactly?!?!

    ;-)

    Ha

well it used to have a nice feel
    and thats gone now
its to full of drunken chav kids from the sou-west
like me (bar the chav part)

  • 40 Cornish miles is equivalent to about 80 London miles....

+1, took the geared bike for a week in the summer for some cycling, surfing action. Did not realise how hilly it was until on the first day we hit a 30%er within the first 5 miles, should of stuck a compact on the front.

  • Agree with you there Bernhard - I did a few miles around the lizard with a trailer in tow. It was fucking hard work, even going downhill cos the trailer was trying it's best to stop me from stopping.

  • +1

There are 1:3 climbs out of many of the villages on the north coast.

I love fixed, but it's not for riding any distance in Cornwall.

  • Its fine
you just have realy silly legs after a while

  • I live near Padstow, and cycle to work, couple of days on my singlespeed, the rest on road and cyclocross (compact) 10 miles each way. There are lots of short steep hills but plenty of rolling gentle "slopes". The wind is the killer, lots of s'west and cold n'west. (Pain is just weakness leaving the body)

The beer is great "Tinners and Proper Job", great food, try the Cornish Arms, St Merryn, just taken over by Rick Stein, not poncey, just a proper pub

  • We still need to break out the maps to look at exactly where we're going, but I got a rack and a small bag for it (with mini-paniers!) and I'm all about getting a proper map and doing the planning this weekend.

Let you all know where we end up, to be sure.

yeah that was some fun times pushing the bike up the 30% hill.

it's good fun cycling out there though but some serious hills which go on for further than you realise!

  • They want to charge you £400 to sleep in a tipi? WTF??

This is a shame because it looks like an awesome idea. I stayed in a covered wagon once outside of Seattle...it was awesome.

Nhatt, you still going to Cornwall? get a bivvy bag or cheap tent and rough it in the fields and beaches, keep out of the the south-westerlies.. get some surfing in dude.. its what Cornwall is famous for.. and clotted cream.. peace

  • Dont forget youth hostels, they are cheap and dotted all along the coast (20 miles or so). The one at Treyarnon Bay takes some beating, great sea veiws, perfect waves outside your window. Perfect!

  • Nhatt, .. get some surfing in dude.... peace

You sound like a genuwine surfer...

Pictures 1 and 2 are deffo not Cornwall and only picture 4 might be, but then it could be anywhere....

  • My mum lives in Menzpance.

    Fixed.

    Sorry :-(

  • Umm, I am deathly afraid of the water, and this trip isn't a major expedition, no out door sleeping.

    Correct,
Durban North Beach, Indian Ocean.. in the water at 5.30am.. riding big waves.. dodging big sharks.. work at 9.00am.. yawn..

  • a bit like riding to work.. has a similar ring to it, right?

  • this wave is over one mile long.. Supertubes at Jeffreys Bay, nr PE, Indian Ocean..
the best surfing beach in Africa, definately top 5 spot in the world..

  • Probably some sort of cheese pasties, I would think. But unless you share your golden knowledge on-thread, we can't Google for the menu. ;)

I recall eating vegan pasties in a town somewhere in Cornwall many years ago [it was either St Austell or St Ives] and am planning to visit later this year, so did a quick search... found http://www.pengennapasties.co.uk/ which are found in several towns inc. St Ives. I'm sure there are more to be found...

  • Rowe's vegitarian pasties made with wholemeal flour are georgeous.

  • rowes is the cornish greggs, its alright but a bit naff really. a pasty isnt a pasty unless its got steak in it, and carrots are illegal. i actually prefer devonshire pastys with the crimp along the top and no crust, which a bit sacrilegious.

i havnt been there in an age, but the blue anchor has an 100 somthing year old challenge. if you can drink 15 pints of spingo and walk down the hallway to the toilet, you get the deeds to the pub. ive managed 5 before being too pissed to actually do anything, let alone walk. i once saw the comdian jethro there, which was funny if you can ignore mild racism and backwards country views. he is from st just, which even by cornish standards is a wierd inbred place.

cornwall is pretty much all hill, but i manage it on a fixed alright. i think it is a bit of shock for people that arnt used to riding in that kind of enviroment, i always find it silly easy to ride when im in kent. the sea winds are also somthing to contend with if you cycling along the coast. i actually got physically blown off the bike while riding through mousehole once. theres also the classic turn a corner and stop dead from a wall of wind, that can be an unerving supprise.

a good ride is the coastal route from st ives to lizard, passing through porth curno (my favourite beach) and praa sands. theres a pub every 10 miles, land yachting, great cliffs to climb, good fishing, nice woods and countryside, and beautiful empty beaches to entertain you on the way. from lizard you can get a boat back to s-t-i-ves, or go east round to falmouth or st mawes.

Ah, thanks. They list 'vegan' as a separate category, which is excellent:

'Creamed tea' doesn't sound vegan, though?

  • you could make the cream with goats milk instead :-)
