yes i think the Magic pre-orders are shipping on the 5th, but they' might be in shops on friday, so have a look in your local vodafone emporium if you haven't ordered one. you can get a £5/month discount for online pre-orders though, if you're quick.
i actually didn't have a chance to try importing a bikely map, sorry, and I didn't get a chance to run through all the apps so I don't know about iMapMyRide or equivalent. I did download an app that tracked running/cycling, but it seemed to be broken (prolly some API changes in 1.5 made it unstable). the Gmaps implementation is excellent though.
Android's application environment is java-like, yes. They made their own Dalvik virtual machine to run applications in, which is based on javascript but kindof reverse engineered and tweaked a bit. so if you've been writing mobile java apps there will still be some adjusting, but nowhere near as much as learning to write iPhone apps (although I'm not a developer so i could be a bit hazy on the details).
